Defiant Acts/Actos Desafiantes presents four bilingual plays by one of Argentina's major playwrights/cartoonists: Diana Raznovich. Since the late 1960s, Raznovich's work both as a cartoonist and in the theater has been marked by her sense of humor and her love of disruption, inversion, critique, and the unexpected. Her career as a playwright was stalled when repeated threats on her life by the Armed Forces pressured Raznovich into exile in 1975, shortly before the military coup that initiated the Dirty War. She lived and worked in Spain, teaching dramaturgy in an independent theater school until she returned to Argentia in 1981 to participate in the "teatro abierto" (Open Theater) festival, which brought together fellow blacklisted artists to produce a cycle of one-act plays, proving Argentina's artists had not succumbed to the dictatorship's silencing tactics. Included in this volume is Raznovich's contribution to the festival, Desconcierto (Disconcerted), as well as Jardin de otono (Inner Gardens, 1983), Casa Matriz (MaTRIX, Inc., 1991), and De atras para adelante (Rear Entry, 1995). Raznovich has earned international prizes and awards for her theater. Her works have been translated into German, French, Italian, and English. These translations by Victoria Martinez, in collaboration with Lidia Ramirez, were given workshop readings by professional actors to make them stageworthy.

The book A Defiant Nation entails the resolution for America to get right with God before it is destroyed for its sinfulness. People of America are turning away from God on a continuous basis, and I believe this is the reason Americans are faced with so many difficult unsolvable problems, and the problems are getting worse by the year!

Defiant Acts is a novel in short-stories set in and around Naperville, IL, a suburb South West of Chicago. Along with being set in a singular location these stories will feature recurring characters including a multi-racial working-class family, an upper-class father dissatisfied with the routine of his life, along with an older brother caring for his developmentally disabled younger brother. The themes this project will address are race and class, as they relate to family life in the suburbs. Stylistically the stories will, largely, adhere to minimalist fiction popularized by Raymond Carver. Minimalist fiction is defined by Larry McCaffery and Sinda Gregory as being, "pared-down, stripped of ornamentation, stark, and yet intense in effect (McCaffery and Gregory, 228)." Also like Carver, the characters in this collections "poignancy is conveyed through an interplay of surface details (Mccaffery and Gregory, 228)." Furthermore "these stories offer the illusion of the authorless story in which "reality" is transcribed and meaning arises without meditation (229)."

Defiant Discourse written by Tamar Katriel and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-29 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In this timely and innovative book, Tamar Katriel takes a language and discourse-centred approach to the subject of peace activism in Israel-Palestine, one of the most significant political issues of our time, while also posing more general questions about the role played by language in activist movements – how activists themselves conceptualize their speech and its relationship to action. Viewing activism as a globalized cultural formation that gives shape and meaning to grassroots organizations' struggles for political change, this book explores the relations between the cultural categories of speech and action as constructed and evaluated in activist contexts. It focuses on the specific empirical field of defiant discourse associated with the soldierly role in Israeli culture, using it to offer an in-depth exploration of the cultural underpinnings of defiant speech. Katriel interrogates discourse-centered activism as part of social movements' action repertoires on the one hand, and of the local cultural construction of speech cultures on the other. This is critical reading for all students and scholars studying activism and social movements within linguistics, Middle Eastern studies, peace studies, and communication studies.

Defiant Sounds: Heavy Metal Music in the Global South brings together authors working from and/or with the Global South to reflect on the roles of metal music throughout their respective regions. The essays position metal music at the epicenter of region-specific experiences of oppression marked by colonialism, ethnic extermination, political persecution, and war. More importantly, the authors stress how metal music is used throughout the Global South to face these oppressive experiences, foster hope, and promote an agenda that seeks to build a better world.

Young And Defiant In Tehran written by Shahram Khosravi and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-28 with Social Science categories.

With more than half its population under twenty years old, Iran is one of the world's most youthful nations. The Iranian state characterizes its youth population in two ways: as a homogeneous mass, "an army of twenty millions" devoted to the Revolution, and as alienated, inauthentic, Westernized consumers who constitute a threat to the society. Much of the focus of the Islamic regime has been on ways to protect Iranian young people from moral hazards and to prevent them from providing a gateway for cultural invasion from the West. Iranian authorities express their anxieties through campaigns that target the young generation and its lifestyle and have led to the criminalization of many of the behaviors that make up youth culture. In this ethnography of contemporary youth culture in Iran's capital, Shahram Khosravi examines how young Tehranis struggle for identity in the battle over the right to self-expression. Khosravi looks closely at the strictures confronting Iranian youth and the ways transnational cultural influences penetrate and flourish. Focusing on gathering places such as shopping centers and coffee shops, Khosravi examines the practices of everyday life through which young Tehranis demonstrate defiance against the official culture and parental dominance. In addition to being sites of opposition, Khosravi argues, these alternative spaces serve as creative centers for expression and, above all, imagination. His analysis reveals the transformative power these spaces have and how they enable young Iranians to develop their own culture as well as individual and generational identities. The text is enriched by examples from literature and cinema and by livid reports from the author's fieldwork.
