Deception has been found to be a part of everyday life. It has also been found that people are relatively poor at detecting deception, with an accuracy roughly equal to that of chance (50%). Research into deception detection, and the analysis of the linguistic cues produced by liars, has only been able to accurately classify approximately 60% of deceptive statements. Previous research has produced models of deception based on textual statements made in social interactions. Examining court testimony from the Gomery Inquiry, we suggest that deception in testimony does not follow a deception model, due to Pennebaker, of fewer first-person pronouns, fewer exclusive words, more negative-emotion words, and more motion verbs. We propose a variation of this model using more first-person pronouns, exclusive words, negative-emotion words, and motion verbs. 'Deceptiveness' scores are computed from signal word counts with correlation captured using Singular Value Decomposition to create a predictive model. We look at the consistency of our classification of the testimony, as compared to other methods of classification (media-based), and find that, we are able to classify 81.25% of individuals who have been classified as having alleged reason to be deceptive (or not), based on media accounts.
