Estratto: Gli Horti Lamiani erano giardini di eccezionale rilievo storico-topografico situati sulla sommita del colle Esquilino a Roma, nell'area grossomodo corrispondente all'attuale piazza Vittorio Emanuele II (Rione Esquilino). Inizialmente di proprieta del console del 3 d.C. Lucio Elio Lamia, furono trasferiti nel demanio imperiale forse gia sotto Tiberio (14-37 d.C.) ed in seguito acquisiti da Caligola (37-41 d.C.), che vi stabili la propria residenza e vi fu anche seppellito per breve tempo dopo la morte. Sappiamo che erano confinanti con gli Horti Maecenatis e che sotto Claudio (41-54 d.C.) essi, riuniti agli Horti Maiani, furono amministrati da un apposito soprintendente (procurator hortorum Lamianorum et Maianorum). Il sito fu a partire dal XVI secolo teatro di importanti scoperte archeologiche ed antiquarie, come il Discobolo Lancellotti al Museo Nazionale Romano e le "Nozze Aldobrandini" alla Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, ma la maggior parte delle scoperte avvennero sul finire del XIX secolo durante i lavori di urbanizzazione del Nuovo Quartiere Esquilino, quando furono documentati da Rodolfo Lanciani in maniera frammentaria ed affrettata alcuni nuclei della proprieta imperiale, poi sacrificati sotto la spinta dell'urgenza...

L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è stato quello di ricostruire attraverso tre inediti modelli in gesso rinvenuti a Villa Maruffi il processo creativo e la storia della Susanna, una delle più importanti opere di Francesco Fabj Altini, oggi parte delle collezioni della Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma. L’artista, il cui nome oggi potrebbe essere poco conosciuto ai non specialisti del settore, fu allievo di due dei più grandi scultori del tempo quali Adamo Tadolini e Pietro Tenerani, lui stesso fu personaggio di spicco della Roma neoclassica, arrivando a ricoprire numerosi incarichi di prestigio, tra cui quello di direttore dell’Accademia di San Luca. Prendendo l’avvio dall’analisi dei documenti in possesso della Galleria Nazionale sulla Susanna, la ricerca si è presto estesa a vari archivi capitolini, ognuno dei quali ha fornito un tassello in più per la ricostruzione della storia di quest’opera, ma soprattutto della complessa figura del Fabj Altini. Questa pubblicazione si presenta inoltre come un’occasione di revisione e aggiornamento sull’artista e la sua produzione, a più di venticinque anni dall’ultimo contributo scientifico, quella voce del Dizionario Biografico degli italiani redatta da Giovanna Mencarelli che assieme alle tesi di laurea inedite di Emanuela Amadori (2002) e Luca Giordani (2013) costituiscono la base per questo lavoro.
