Man deutet mit dem Finger darauf und der Hörer weiß sofort, dass dieses oder jenes gemeint ist. Trotzdem finden sich in der mündlichen Kommunikation relativ viele Deiktika, auch wenn man sich dessen als Sprecher oder Hörer nicht wirklich bewusst ist. Wie aber verhält es sich in Texten verschiedenster Art mit Deiktika? Findet man in bestimmten Textsorten mehr oder weniger Deiktika? Weisen literarische Texte andere Deiktika auf als nicht literarische Texte? Gibt es typische Deiktika, die bestimmte Textsorten prägen? All diese und weitere Fragen im Detail zu klären würde den Rahmen dieser Arbeit sprengen, aber trotzdem soll versucht werden einen kleinen Überblick über dieses Thema zu geben, weshalb unterschiedliche Textsorten verwendet werden und nicht nur ein bestimmter Typ, wie etwa der des fiktionalen Textes. Es sollen hier nicht unterschiedliche Textsorten miteinander verglichen werden, jedenfalls nicht das, was nichts mit dem Thema zu tun hat. Die verschiedenen Textsorten sollen die unterschiedliche Verwendung von Deiktika in bestimmten Texten verdeutlichen. Hierbei wurde versucht eine Auswahl zu treffen, die sich nicht nur auf einen Bereich beschränkt, da man bei gegenwartssprachlichen Texten ja nicht nur literarische Werke verwenden muss. Ein Teil der Texte wurde ganz untersucht und ein anderer Teil nur auszugsweise aufgrund des Umfangs.

In dieser Arbeit sollen die Textsorten politische Rede, Roman, Zeitschriftenartikel, (Boulevard-) Zeitungsartikel, Werbeanzeige sowie Filme, Songs, Fernsehnachrichten, TV-Boulevardmagazine und Radionachrichten exemplarisch auf ihren Gebrauch deiktischer Ausdrücke und deiktischer Felder untersucht werden. Ziel soll dabei sein, Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten herauszustellen und nach Verwendungsformen zu suchen, die nur in einem bzw. wenigen der gewählten Medien möglich oder angemessen sind. Auch die allgemeine Häufigkeit deiktischer Ausdrücke in verschiedenen Textsorten soll untersucht werden. Außerdem soll gezeigt werden, wie zentral wichtig der Gebrauch deiktischer Ausdrücke je nach Intention, Übermittlungsart oder inhaltlicher Idee des Äußerers/Autors ist. Natürlich kann in diesem begrenzten Rahmen keine umfassende empirische Analyse der Beispieltexte geleistet werden, deshalb wird hier das Augenmerk auf besonders auffällige Merkmale gerichtet.

Special emphasis is placed on contrastive studies that take cognitive and cultural context into account. This book is a comprehensive study of the evidential system in German. It presents a systematic description of the encoding of evidentiality in present-day German, as well as a diachronic reconstruction of the relevant sources and paths of grammaticalization from the Old High German period onwards. Based on empirical corpus research, the study investigates the degree of grammaticalization of each single evidential construction and the make-up of the present-day system as well as the diachronic stages that lead to the present state. The book focuses on three main issues. First, it is concerned with the general notion of evidentiality, its deictic character, and with the interrelations between the domains of evidentiality and epistemic modality. Second, the book presents the results of the synchronic corpus-based analysis of the German evidential periphrastic constructions werden 'become' + infinitive, scheinen 'seem', drohen 'threaten', versprechen 'promise' + zu 'to'- infinitive, which constitute a paradigm for coding evidentiality in Present Day German. Third, the diachronic development of the evidential constructions is represented as a complex grammaticalization process, interacting with the development of modal constructions and leading to a highly differentiated category of modal and evidential distinctions in the grammar of German.

Evidentiality, the linguistic encoding of a speaker's or writer's evidence for an asserted proposition, has begun to receive serious attention from linguists only in the last quarter century. Much of this attention has focused on languages that encode evidentiality in the grammar, while much less interest has been shown in languages that express evidentiality through means other than inflectional morphology. In English and German, for instance, the verbs of perception - those verbs denoting sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste - are prime carriers of evidential meaning. This study surveys the most prominent of the perception verbs in English and German across all five sensory modalities and accounts for the range of evidential meanings by examining the general polysemy found among perception verbs, as well as the specific complementation patterns in which these verbs occur.

The main topics pursued in this volume are based on empirical insights derived from Germanic: logical and typological dispositions about aspect-modality links. These are probed in a variety of non-related languages. The logically establishable links are the following: Modal verbs are aspect sensitive in the selection of their infinitival complements – embedded infinitival perfectivity implies root modal reading, whereas embedded infinitival imperfectivity triggers epistemic readings. However, in marked contexts such as negated ones, the aspectual affinities of modal verbs are neutralized or even subject to markedness inversion. All of this suggests that languages that do not, or only partially, bestow upon full modal verb paradigms seek to express modal variations in terms of their aspect oppositions. This typological tenet is investigated in a variety of languages from Indo-European (German, Slavic, Armenian), African, Asian, Amerindian, and Creoles. Seeming deviations and idiosyncrasies in the interaction between aspect and modality turn out to be highly rule-based.
