An analysis of the scholarly criticism of the great Viennese writer up to the year 2000. Schnitzler, one of the most prolific Austrian writers of the 20th century, ruthlessly dissected his society's erotic posturing and phobias about sex and death. His most penetrating analyses include Lieutenant Gustl, the first stream-of-consciousness novella in German; Reigen, a devastating cycle of one-acts mapping the social limits of a sexual daisy-chain; and Der Weg ins Freie, a novel that combines a love story with a discussion ofthe roadblocks facing Austria's Jews. Today, his popularity is reflected by new editions and translations and by adaptations for theater, television, and film by artists such as Tom Stoppard and Stanley Kubrick. This book examinesSchnitzler reception up to 2000, beginning with the journalistic reception of the early plays. Before being suspended by a decade of Nazism, criticism in the 1920s and 30s emphasized Schnitzler's determinism and decadence. Not until the early 60s was humanist scholarship able to challenge this verdict by pointing out Schnitzler's ethical indictment of impressionism in the late novellas. During the same period, Schnitzler, whom Freud considered his literary "Doppelgänger," was often subjected to Freudian psychoanalytical criticism; but by the 80s, scholarship was citing his own thoroughgoing objections to such categories. Since the 70s, Schnitzler's remonstrance toward the Austrianestablishment has been examined by social historians and feminist critics alike, and the recently completed ten-volume edition of Schnitzler's diary has met with vibrant interest. Andrew C. Wisely is associate professor of German at Baylor University.

Das Werk Arthur Schnitzlers reflektiert im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert noch die Gedanken und literarischen Motive der Dekadenzliteratur. Diese interpretiert auch den Begriff des Lebens auf ihre eigene Weise. Im Laufe der Jahre wird Schnitzlers Sicht auf diesen zentralen Begriff der Jahrhundertwendeliteratur jedoch reifer, er misst dem "Leben" eine neue Bedeutung zu. Die Arbeit erl„utert die Wandlungen des Lebensbegriffs bei Schnitzler vor dem Hintergrund lebensphilosophischer Ans„tze bei S”ren Kierkegaard, Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche sowie Wilhelm Dilthey. Ein genauer textanalytischer Blick auf die Novelle "Sterben" aus der frhen Phase, das Schauspiel "Der Schleier der Beatrice" sowie das berhmte Drama "Professor Bernhardi", das einen der H”hepunkte in Schnitzlers Schaffen markiert, zeigt, wie sich die Interpretation und der Stellenwert des Begriffes "Leben" ver„ndert. Mit einbezogen in die Interpretation wird dabei ganz wesentlich auch das autobiographische Werk Schnitzlers, das nicht nur aus der Autobiographie "Jugend in Wien" besteht, sondern vor allem auch umfangreiche Briefwechsel und Tagebuchb„nde umfasst. Dazu kommt die Aphorismensammlung "Buch der Sprche und Bedenken" sowie theoretische Schriften wie "Der Geist im Wort und der Geist in der Tat", die Schnitzlers Haltung und theoretische Konstrukte reflektieren. Die Arbeit thematisiert damit einen in der Schnitzler-Forschung eher unterrepr„sentierten Blickwinkel. Gerade auch die Bezge zwischen Schnitzlers Werk und den philosophischen Hauptstr”mungen der Zeit werden eher selten in den Blick genommen, da Schnitzler selbst sich nur versteckt und verstreut zu diesen Themen ge„uáert hat.

Intellectual culture in early twentieth-century Austria reached levels of originality and excellence that have rarely been equalled before or since. Shadow Lines examines works by major novelists, dramatists, poets, and intellectuals of that extraordinary era-among them, Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler, Robert Musil, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Rainer Maria Rilke, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Franz Kafka. Lorna Martens considers how each of these authors contributed to a decisive transformation in Austrian culture, involving a shift away from the dialectical syntheses of much nineteenth-century German thought and culture to potent, unresolvable dualisms of known and unknown-orderly and chaotic-features of human experience: consciousness and the unconscious, reason and the irrational, language and the inexpressible. In most of these writers, according to Martens, all that is knowable, reasonable, and orderly is grounded in that which is dark, irrational, chaotic. What Martens calls "the dark area" emerges variously "as the unconscious (Freud), the sexual drive (Freud, Schnitzler, Musil), the death instinct (Freud, Schnitzler), the dangerous chaos below the surface of things (Rilke), the inaccessible totality (von Hofmannsthal), or the unsayable (Mauthner, von Hofmannsthal, Musil, Wittgenstein)." The essential yet enigmatic relation between the known and the unknown leads to much that is unsettling-and strangely fascinating-in these writers' works. Die Arbeit setzt sich mit der Auffassung auseinander, daß die frühen Dramen Arthur Schnitzlers zum Epischen tendierten, weil ihnen ein deterministisches Weltbild zugrunde liege. Schnitzlers theoretische Äußerungen, vor allem seine Aphorismen geben aber einen perspektivischen Schicksalsbegriff zu erkennen, der als eine Dialektik von Notwendigkeit und Möglichkeit Dramatik ermöglicht. Sofern die dramatische Bewegung an das Bewußtsein der Gestalten gebunden ist, wird die psychologische Ebene der Dramentexte bedeutsam. Das Psychologische verweist auf eine gesellschaftliche oder historische Wirklichkeit, die auf es zurückverweist. Indem das Milieu den Vorgang spiegelt, nimmt es an dessen Dynamik teil und wird zum dramatischen Bild. Und umgekehrt intensiviert es als dramatisches Bild die dramatische Struktur des Geschehens. Milieu und Geschehen, Bild und Struktur kommentieren sich gegenseitig. Die Einzelanalysen von vier ausgewählten Dramen, des dreiaktigen Schauspiels Das Märchen, der Szenenreihe Reigen, des Einakters Paracelsus und des fünfaktigen Schauspiels Der einsame Weg, zeigen, daß ein Zusammenhang zwischen Bild und Struktur besteht und den dramatischen Stil dieser psychologischen Dramen hervorbringt.

At the turn of the twentieth century, dueling was required of officers and gentlemen in Austria. This study examines the importance of honor to the Viennese playwright Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) and to his society. It shows the extent to which discourses of class, gender, and race sustained dueling. It also identifies the sociological factors that transformed those discourses and thus helped to abolish dueling in post-war Austria and Germany.
