Pablo de la Cruz fue un arquitecto cuyas obras han aparecido constantemente en catálogos o manuales de historia de la arquitectura colombiana. Había indicios de su trabajo, se contaba con noticias fragmentadas de su obra, pero sorprendentemente la aproximación sistemática a su contribución a la cultura del país no se había hecho aún. Felizmente, el grupo de investigación, dirigido por los profesores de la Universidad Nacional Jorge Ramírez y Silvia Arango, ha decidido mantener el empeño de estudiarlo y presentar aquí el resultado. Este libro acerca de Pablo de la Cruz en realidad no es sobre él, o no solo sobre él. Es también el testimonio de una sociedad empeñada en construir obras cada vez más necesarias; es el relato de las instituciones a las que se delegó la tarea; es la historia de políticos hábiles, visionarios o torpes, quienes tenían influencia definitiva en la construcción de proyectos de ciudad. Es, así mismo, la referencia a ingenieros, constructores, dibujantes, artistas, periodistas y colegas que, como él, se involucraron en empresas ambiciosas en un periodo en el que la angustia por salir del “atraso” se encontró con la prosperidad económica. Es, en síntesis, la historia de un momento de la ciudad. Pablo de la Cruz es el arquitecto del parque Nacional, Villa Adelaida, el Instituto Pedagógico Nacional para Señoritas, el Palacio de Justicia, la Estación del Ferrocarril del Sur y de gran parte de las edificaciones del Hospital San Juan de Dios, entre tantas de sus obras llevadas a cabo en la capital. La investigación sobre Pablo de la Cruz, así como sobre tantos arquitectos y firmas de arquitectos, es una incitación entonces para aprovechar esa diversidad, para encontrar nuevos acercamientos, para plantear nuevos enfoques y proponer la indagación sobre nuevos actores, que quizá aún no hemos considerado o valorado lo suficiente.
