The fascinating and chequered history of Delhi through the centuries has been a popular subject among authors. Yet, only a few other than K.A. Nizami record in rich detail the cultural, social, economic, and spiritual fabric of the city—the ‘gorgeous blaze of glory’ that was Delhi—between the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries. He presents his accounts of the periods of the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals, and the poet Ghalib through the analyses of wide-ranging sources: original literary, travel, biographical, hagiographical, and administrative accounts in Persian, Hindavi, and Urdu. This book is a compilation of the historian’s lectures delivered at the University of Delhi and the Ghalib Institute in Delhi, first published in Urdu in 1972. The author’s conversational style, replete with literary allusions, makes this an essential read for lovers and admirers of this beguiling city and its historic Sufi culture. Ather Farouqui’s English translation captures the true essence of Nizami’s work and now makes it easily available to a wider readership.

A chess game was going on. The land belonged to Delhi. The Whites and the Blacks were playing initially. First, the Whites won, and the Blacks lost. Later on, the Blacks won and the Whites were ousted out. The Blacks, after winning assumed the mantle of the Whites only. Many were spectators of this game, but the two persons were allured towards it so much that they started to write about it. The historian took the pen in hand first and wrote the real account of this game played on the land of Delhi. Next, was the turn of the fiction writers to weave a fictional account based on the real account. The historian and the fiction writers then turned back and they saw that their combined effort resulted in a mutual overlap of History and the fiction. The calender was laid open, the pen was in the hand, the eyes were searching for the historical dates and the years that can be used to navigate its history. The peregrination was long and challenging, but quite interesting. It was a navigation from 1857 to 1984. Different sailors, different turbulent waves, different rise and fall with each wave, different types of historical contours in which fatality was hidden, different tunes of destiny and the time would be what the readers will meet in relation to Delhi, as they will start turning the pages. Nothing in this world exists in isolation. Every present has a past. This past, which we refer to as history will be the main focus of my research. History is always full of the anecdotes of success, defeats, jubiliations and the commiserations. The historians were always engaged in bringing out the facts about person, building or a city etc. They were allured towards the past of certain things. It was something that they admire and wanted to get into its depth. They wanted to document it in their documents, in their records because of certain remarkable feature in their history.

The celebration of the centenary of the Indian National Congress prompted a scholarly re-examination of that organization in the midst of an active international discussion about the nature of Indian society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Any group of historians who come together to give fresh consideration to the Congress – its organization, leadership, ideology and support – also join in the wider debate going on in Indian history. This volume, first published in 1991, reflects such an engagement with the full range of contemporary discussion, representing not just scholarship in five different countries but also quite distinct historiographical traditions. It surveys the origins and development of the Congress from its inception to its development up to Independence.

This is a book of photography, and of history. Delhi is made up of seven, or eight, or nine cities, depending on how you would like to count the cities and the growth of Delhi. The seven cities have been chosen because they are representative of the growth of the city, and have been critical to the development of what Delhi is today. The accent has been on photographing the monuments of Delhi. The photographs of each city have been processed digitally. Vintage processes have been simulated in Photoshop, and the photographs of each city have been processed with a different technique. As far as possible, the effort has been to mirror the chronological development of Delhi, with a scaled down chronological development of photography. There is beauty and drama in Delhi, as well as in it's history. Many men and women have contributed to its growth and development into a major megalopolis. Their deeds have played a seminal role in making Delhi what it is today. It is a city that blends modernity, chaos with the memories and bones of the dead. In a similar vein, there is mystery and magic in some of the vintage processes of photography. Without the sheer innovation and inventiveness of the men and women in the 1800's and 1900's, photography would not be what it is today. This book attempts to blend both - the history of Delhi, with aspects of the history of photography.
