I shifted my family to another place. The Aam Aadmi Party used its network of people associated with mosques and madarsas and relied on leaders such as Tahir Hussain and Amanat Ulla Khan to bag the Muslim votes in Delhi. In return for the votes, it seems that the party gave the license to a specific community to consign north east Delhi to flames. Now that the chargesheet has been finalised by the Delhi Police about the riots that took place in East Delhi, it will be a fallacy to disassociate the riots that took place in places such as Jafrabad, Maujpur, Babarpur, Gokul Puri, Karawal Nagar, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar from the violence that took place during the anti-CAA protests. The violence that occurred during the anti-CAA protests in places such as Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar, Seelampur were actually the precursor to a big riot. The riot that took place in the north-east parts of Delhi during US President Donald Trump's visit from February 23-26, 2020. For the violence that was orchestrated during these riots, the work of collecting empty bottles, stones and storing these on rooftops of houses had begun on February 4. Many people of the Muslim community had filled petrol in their vehicles so that this fuel could later be used for making petrol bombs. In many Muslim families, pamphlets about such riots were distributed with instructions on how to deal with Hindus. It is not rocket science to understand that the Muslim community was already prepared for the riots that broke out in north-east Delhi. Hindus did not get a chance to get their act together. Slowly the conspiracy behind the riots is unraveling and the lies perpetrated by the Communist ecosystem are falling flat. Conventional wisdom says that integration into the global marketplace tends to weaken the power of traditional faith in developing countries. But, as Meera Nanda argues in this path-breaking book, this is hardly the case in today’s India. Against expectations of growing secularism, India has instead seen a remarkable intertwining of Hinduism and neoliberal ideology, spurred on by a growing capitalist class. It is this “State-Temple-Corporate Complex,” she claims, that now wields decisive political and economic power, and provides ideological cover for the dismantling of the Nehru-era state-dominated economy. According to this new logic, India’s rapid economic growth is attributable to a special “Hindu mind,” and it is what separates the nation’s Hindu population from Muslims and others deemed to be “anti-modern.” As a result, Hindu institutions are replacing public ones, and the Hindu “revival” itself has become big business, a major source of capital accumulation. This book draws together empirical contributions which focus on conceptualising the lived realities of time and temporality in migrant lives and journeys. This book uncovers the ways in which human existence is often overshadowed by legislative interpretations of legal and illegalised. It unearths the consequences of uncertainty and unknowing for people whose futures often lay in the hands of states, smugglers, traffickers and employers that pay little attention to the significance of individuals’ time and thus, by default, their very human existence. Overall, the collection draws perspectives from several disciplines and locations to advance knowledge on how temporal exclusion relates to social and personal processes of exclusion. It begins by conceptualising what we understand by ‘time’ and looks at how temporality and lived realities of time combine for people during and after processes of migration. As the book develops, focus is trained on temporality and survival during encampment, border transgression, everyday borders and hostility, detention, deportation and the temporal impacts of border deaths. This book both conceptualises and realises the lived experiences of time with regard to those who are afforded minimal autonomy over their own time: people living in and between borders.
