"As is well known the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) is a constitutional innovation, but can its scheme deliver? This timely and provocative book probes the extent to which the HRA is guaranteeing rights and whether it is transforming the legal landscape. This companion text to Understanding Human Rights Principles (Hart Publications 2001) is the culmination of a six-month project where key elements of the HRA were analysed and subjected to detailed scrutiny by expert practitioners and academics. The result is seven chapters of the highest quality which examine the following subjects including the reach of the Act and its jurisdictional scope and how to strike the balance under the HRA between interpretation and incompatibility. Two chapters look at remedies for breach of human rights. The first under the HRA and the second using Community law principles. The text then goes on to consider assessment of fact, due deference, and the wider impact of the Human Rights Act in administrative law. It then asks what is public power? And looks at the courts' approach to the public authority definition under the Act. Finally access to court under the Human Rights Act is examined including standing, legal assistance and third party intervenors."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

The Delivery of Human Rights reflects on two overlapping issues in international human rights law: how can existing norms be better implemented and effected, and how can other branches of international law or other international actors be used so as to provide an improved delivery of those norms. Rather than simply looking at the content of the rights, this book will also explore how the framers’ intention that individuals benefit from the norms can be achieved. The contributors to this volume are notable experts in the area of human rights law and include Paul Hunt, Malcolm Evans, Theo van Boven, Andrew Clapham, and Hurst Hannum. The book addresses such as the Role of Special Rapporteurs, how can the absolute prohibition of torture be properly implemented, Responsibility to Protect, non-state actors, including businesses, and human rights.

A gripping biography of the mail carrier who orchestrated the Great Savannah boycott — and was instrumental in bringing equality to his community. "Grow up and be somebody," Westley Wallace Law's grandmother encouraged him as a young boy living in poverty in segregated Savannah, Georgia. Determined to make a difference in his community, W.W. Law assisted blacks in registering to vote, joined the NAACP and trained protestors in the use of nonviolent civil disobedience, and, in 1961, led the Great Savannah Boycott. In that famous protest, blacks refused to shop in downtown Savannah. When city leaders finally agreed to declare all of its citizens equal, Savannah became the first city in the south to end racial discrimination. A lifelong mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, W.W. Law saw fostering communication between blacks and whites as a fundamental part of his job. As this affecting, strikingly illustrated biography makes clear, this "unsung hero" delivered far more than the mail to the citizens of the city he loved.

"In 2019, a child born in Japan will live to the age of 84, whereas a child born in Sierra Leone will only live until the age of 54.1 Similar disparities exist between rich and poor communities within countries.2 These differences in life expectancy are not caused by genetics, biology, or culture. Health inequities are caused by poverty, racism, a lack of medical care, and other social forces that influence health. A critical analysis of the historical roots of this gross and systemic inequality and of the political economy that continues inequality is a fundamental part of the study of global health"--

An Introduction To Global Health Delivery written by Joia S. Mukherjee and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-14 with Medical categories.

"What Mukherjee attempts, and succeeds in doing, is to offer what many students -- undergraduates as well as students of medicine, nursing, and public health -- have long clamored for: a primer not only of recent developments in global health, but also a patient dissection of what has worked less well (and what hasn't worked at all)." --Paul Farmer, from the foreword The field of global health has roots in the AIDS pandemic of the late 20th century, when the installation of health care systems supplanted older, low-cost prevention programs to help stem the spread of HIV in low- and middle-income Africa. Today's global health is rooted the belief that health care is a human right, and that by promoting health we can cultivate equity and social justice in places where such values aren't always found. AN INTRODUCTION TO GLOBAL HEALTH DELIVERY is a short but immersive introduction to global health's origins, actors, interventions, and challenges. Informed by physician Joia Mukherjee's quarter-century of experience fighting disease and poverty in more than a dozen countries, it delivers a clear-eyed overview of the movement underway to reduce global health disparities and establish sustainable access to care, including details of what has worked so far -- and what hasn't. Grounded in the historical and social factors that propagate health disparities and enriched with case studies and exercises that encourage readers to think critically about the subject matter, this text is the essential starting point for readers of any background seeking a practical grounding in global health's promise and progress.

How to become a human rights professional is not an academic book on human rights law, but a practical career guide for anyone who wants to learn more about human rights advocacy, whether they are just starting or have years of experience. "I absolutely LOVE THIS BOOK! I learned a lot reading this. Human rights need to be recognized as more than a buzz phrase, they're grounded in our everyday experiences." - Violeta Antovska, Diplomatic Security Officer to the Permanent Mission of Ghana to the UN Human rights work is much more than just providing volunteer service to your community. If done right, this career can be both highly fulfilling and financially lucrative. In this book, you'll discover step-by-step how to become a successful human rights professional – from delivering human rights training and advocating for human rights to offering consultancy services or opening your own NGO. Understanding human rights can be confusing especially because they aren't defined in one place. There is no one-size-fits-all definition of human rights, and often times human rights get mixed up with civil rights, political rights, procedural rights, liberties, and freedoms. The book is designed to be a quick read with actionable advice that can help you improve your knowledge, skills and advance your career in the field of human rights. The book covers topics such as: What are Human Rights? Human Rights vs civil rights and other types of rights The difference between an activist and an advocate The role of human rights education How to create your own NGO What is a Human Rights Consultant Conducting human rights training How to engage in legislative advocacy for human rights
