Come, senz'incorrere nello sde gno di molti, o cattolici o protestanti, prendere in boc ca, si per lodare che per criticare, i Luteri, i Melan ctoni, gli Ecolampadj, i Calvini, dichiarati nemici della chiesa romana, ma capi e maestri di grossi partiti, che contano seguaci e discepoli rispettabili letterati? Un giu sto e moderato elogio d'un Baronio, d'un Bellarmino, d'un Petavio, o d'altro cattolico, che ad alcuni de' no stri sembrerà troppo freddo e ristretto, sarà disprezzato da' protestanti come un tratto d'adulazione e di parzia lità. E sono persuaso che anche presso que' medesimi che professano la stessa credenza al trattare di certe ma terie m'attirerò da alcuni l'accusa d'insolente e d'ardito mentre altri mi taccieranno di timido e d'indulgente; e le stesse espressioni, che sembreranno ad alcuni prodot te da parzialità e da riscaldamento, mi meriteranno da altri la nota d'indifl'erenza e freddezza. Veramente que sto spirito di partito teologico, che così spesso accieca ilettori, fa ugualmente non rare volte traviare ne' loro giudizj gli scrittori, che sovente si lasciano trasportare, e lodano e biasimano, innalzano e deprimono, esagera no e sminuiscono, intendono e spongono secondo che esige il partito, da cui sono dominati. E questo difet to, che è assai comune alla maggior. Parte de' teologi, si crederà di potersi con particolare ragione imputare a me, che sono stato per varj anni addetto ad un Corpo religioso, a cui professo e conservero mentre viva figlia le e tenero attaccamento, e de' cui scrittori devo in que sto tomo frequentemente fare menzione; nè dubito pun to che, come cattolico e come gesuita, passerò presso mol ti per sospetto di parzialità, e fors'anche di fanatismo. Quanti al leggere citati tanti autori gesuiti'non diranno nel loro cuore, che si vede il gesuita che scrive, e.nel sentirli lodare m'accuseranno come uomo, che si lascia condurre dalla passione? Ma io li prego, di qualunque religione, di qualunque scuola essi sieno, di mettersi nel mio luogo, d'esaminare con qualche diligenza le materie che tratto, e se non -si troveranno costretti loro malgra do a ricorrere agli autori gesuiti, e lodare il Bellarmi no, il Petavio, il Sirmondo, il Labbe, i bollandisti e quasi tutti que' gesuiti, che sono da me mentovati con qualche lode, abbandonino pure liberamente il mio giu dizio, e mi traducano come a lor piaccia al tribunale de' sinceri e dotti lettori, e m'accusino altamente di parzia le fanatico condotto dalla passione.
