Nella prima età moderna l'educazione della donna non è una questione privata. È un'esigenza collettiva che concorre ad assicurare la stabilità dell'ordine civile, di cui il sacramento del matrimonio rappresenta una delle istituzioni fondamentali. Il ruolo sociale della donna è pertanto fatto oggetto di una severa trattatistica comportamentale e sottoposto a rigorose prescrizioni normative. L'analisi della documentazione rivela una precisa volontà di controllo della femminilità, senza escludere metodi coercitivi e persino brutali, come la segregazione conventuale. Questo libro indaga la funzione letteraria e sociale della donna lungo un arco cronologico che va dal primo Quattrocento al XVII secolo, in una originale prospettiva di ricerca finalizzata a mettere in evidenza i pregiudizi e le violenze di cui figlie e mogli sono state vittime. Grazie a un duplice taglio di analisi, culturale e politico, l'autore ricostruisce lo stretto intreccio tra la manualistica pedagogica e il disciplinamento messo in atto dal potere ecclesiastico, svelando, da un lato, le forme della ricorrente misoginia e, dall'altro, lo stereotipo della donna di famiglia, esempio di casta sposa e devota madre.
