Non solo trattato di filosofia politica, Dello spirito libero è anche e soprattutto un capolavoro di resistenza: un’opera composta di frammenti, perché «non si può ormai pensare e scrivere che per frammenti, essendo esploso il mondo di ieri in mille pezzi». Un libro matto e disperatissimo, profondamente autentico. Scegliendo il procedimento analogico e lo stile metaforico, senza mai cedere all’autobiografia o alla confessione, Tronti richiama e contempla tragicamente i grandi temi della storia e dell’uomo: il Moderno occupato dal capitalismo e la concezione borghese della vita, la Rivoluzione d’ottobre e l’errore del socialismo subìto, il crollo del comunismo e la fine della storia; la memoria, le classi, il feticcio della merce, la critica della democrazia, l’autonomia della politica. Nelle riflessioni su libertà, destino e profezia risuonano le parole di Marx, Tocqueville, Smith; Montaigne, Hegel, Nietzsche; Musil, Kafka, Benjamin. Ma anche san Paolo, i vangeli, la Bhagavadg?t? : essere dentro il proprio tempo senza appartenere al proprio tempo è possibile solo riscoprendo la dimensione spirituale del vivere, nella convinzione che contrapporre due orizzonti grandemente umani come cristianesimo e comunismo è stata una sciagura per la modernità. Dello spirito libero è un esercizio ascetico di pensiero complesso – come deve esserlo il pensiero che sfida se stesso – mai artificiosamente difficile, mai falso. Tronti è un autore che si mette in gioco fino in fondo. E al suo lettore non può chiedere di meno.

The pandemic has brought into sharp relief the fundamental relationship between institution and human life: at the very moment when the virus was threatening to destroy life, human beings called upon institutions – on governments, on health systems, on new norms of behavior – to combat the virus and preserve life. Drawing on this and other examples, Roberto Esposito argues that institutions and human life are not opposed to one another but rather two sides of a single figure that, together, delineate the vital character of institutions and the instituting power of life. What else is life, after all, if not a continuous institution, a capacity for self-regeneration along new and unexplored paths?
