Allein in Deutschland verüben jedes Jahr mehr als 10.000 Menschen Suizid und mehr als 100.000 Menschen versuchen sich selbst das Leben zu nehmen. Es sterben mehr Menschen durch Suizid als durch Verkehrsunfälle, Verbrechen und illegale Drogen zusammengenommen. Von jedem Suizidversuch sind bis zu sechs Angehörige betroffen. Es bleibt jedoch ein Thema, das noch immer stark tabuisiert wird. Kommen Selbstmörder in die Hölle? Werden sie im Jenseits über den Tod hinaus bestraft? Dr. Plackov ist dieser Frage nachgegangen. Es ist die erste Studie dieser Art weltweit. Dazu hat er zwischen den Jahren 2003 und 2021 international 123 Fälle gesammelt. Alles Menschen, die sich selbst töteten und dabei eine Nahtod-Erfahrung erlebt haben. Das Anliegen der vorliegenden Studie ist es, die spirituellen Konsequenzen eines Suizids auszuleuchten. Damit will sie gezielt Menschen, die mit dem Gedanken spielen sich das Leben nehmen zu wollen, eine Orientierungshilfe an die Hand geben, die weit über das rein Irdische hinausgeht. Angesprochen werden sollen aber auch Berater und Therapeuten, die sich mit dem Thema Suizid auseinandersetzen. Dabei geht es vor allem um die spirituellen Aspekte, deren Einbeziehung für eine erfolgreiche Beratung wichtig wären. Deshalb wurde die Studie bewusst in das Thema Suizid eingebettet. Das Buch wendet sich aber auch an all diejenigen, die sich in der Suizidprävention engagieren. Ihnen sollte die vorliegende Arbeit als Inspirationsquelle für ihr Wirken dienen. Zu guter Letzt richtet sich das Buch an alle, die Interesse an den Themen Suizid und Nahtod-Erfahrungen haben.

Robin Wooffitt, in a systematic analysis of how people describe their paranormal encounters as factual experiences, introduces this field to the student and reader unfamiliar with its methods and theoretical constructs. Powerful cultural scepticism about the paranormal ensures that such experiences not only provide an implicit challenge to common-sense understanding of the world, but also undermine the pronouncements of the scientific orthodoxy.
