Topophobia written by Dylan Trigg and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-15 with Philosophy categories.

Topophobia: A Phenomenology of Anxiety is a vivid second-person inquiry into how anxiety plays a formative part in the constitution of subjectivity. While anxiety has assumed a central role in the history of philosophy – and phenomenology in particular – until now there has been no sustained study of how it shapes our sense of self and being in the world. This book seeks to address that lacuna. Calling upon the author's own experience of being agoraphobic, it asks a series of critical questions: How is our experience of the world affected by our bodily experience of others? What role do moods play in shaping our experience of the world? How can we understand the role of conditions such as agoraphobia in relation to our normative understanding of the body and the environment? What is the relation between anxiety and home? The reader will gain an insight into the strange experience of being unable to cross a bridge, get on a bus, and enter a supermarket without tremendous anxiety. At the same time, they will discover aspects of their own bodily experience that are common to both agoraphobes and non-agoraphobes alike. Integrating phenomenological inquiry with current issues in the philosophy of mind, Trigg arrives at a renewed understanding of identity, which arranges self, other and world as a unified whole. Written with a sense of vividness often lacking in academic discourse, this is living philosophy.

Constructing Panic written by Lisa Capps and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-01 with Psychology categories.

Meg Logan has not been farther than two miles from home in six years. She has agoraphobia, a debilitating anxiety disorder that entraps its sufferers in the fear of leaving safe havens such as home. Paradoxically, while at this safe haven, agoraphobics spend much of their time ruminating over past panic experiences and imagining similar hypothetical situations. In doing so, they create a narrative that both describes their experience and locks them into it. Constructing Panic offers an unprecedented analysis of one patient's experience of agoraphobia. In this novel interdisciplinary collaboration between a clinical psychologist and a linguist, the authors probe Meg's stories for constructions of emotions, actions, and events. They illustrate how Meg uses grammar and narrative structure to create and recreate emotional experiences that maintain her agoraphobic identity. In this work Capps and Ochs propose a startling new view of agoraphobia as a communicative disorder. Constructing Panic opens up the largely overlooked potential for linguistic and narrative analysis by revealing the roots of panic and by offering a unique framework for therapeutic intervention. Readers will find in these pages hope for managing panic through careful attention to how we tell the story of our lives.

In Fear No More noted clinical psychotherapist Diana Hailparn teaches a step-by-step technique that enables people to understand, and overcome their fears, anxieties, and phobias. Hailparn illustrates how the sensitivities that enhance relationships and make people feel happy are the same sensitivities, when influenced negatively by the imagination, that result in vulnerability and fear. You will learn how to understand why you were "selected" to experience fears, anxieties, and phobias; develop techniques to soothe yourself during panic; begin to quiet the inner voice that screams humiliation and disaster; allow your creative, powerful talents to emerge; develop strategies for dealing with hostile and critical people; start seeing the value of rewarding and appreciating yourself for your courage; and begin to love yourself in ways you never imagined. Fear No More is replete with case studies and covered the fear response, creative imagination, social fears and their effect on relationships, the meaning of unconscious symptoms, nutrition and anxiety, fears of success, recurrence, and raising anxiety-free children.

Love, Fear and Other Things That Cry Out In The Night - Moments Alone With Agoraphobia was written by Marilyn R. Moody approximately 20 years ago. At that time in her life she was diagnosed with this illness. It was a difficult way to live. Because she had young children, she managed to keep working feeling responsible for their financial needs even though she was married to a very supportive man. Writing was one of the ways she coped with the fears brought on by agoraphobia. Ms. Moody saved the writing from that time. Over the years, as she has grown healthier and stronger, she would often take out the book that originally was written for her eyes only to read again her thoughts from that time in her life. She would then realize how far she had progressed. Now, she has included those writings into one book to share with others who might also be experiencing the devastating effects from agoraphobia. She would like them to know that they are not alone.

Phobic Geographies written by Joyce Davidson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Agoraphobia categories.

Despite recent estimates that there are currently 10 million people in the UK suffering from phobias, there is a substantial and conspicuous gap in existing academic literature and research on this topic. This book addresses this gap in relation to geography literature, but also extending beyond this field to connect with a wide range of academics, health professionals and phobic 'others' whose ideas are (re)formed by fear. In doing so, it provides non-clinical, specifically geographical insights into phobia, of relevance for its sufferers and expands human geographical understandings of the relations between gender, embodiment, space and mental health, via a study of agoraphobia. This book argues that a critical geographic perspective is better placed to take account of the importance of wider social contexts and relations, and can give a fully spatialised account of the disorder more faithful to the way sufferers actually describe their experiences. By drawing attention to some of the more unusual ways that people relate to each other, and to their environments, we can illuminate some ordinarily taken for granted aspects of personal geographies.
