The Theory Of Social Democracy written by Thomas Meyer and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-30 with Political Science categories.

The ascendancy of neo-liberalism in different parts of the world has put social democracy on the defensive. Its adherents lack a clear rationale for their policies. Yet a justification for social democracy is implicit in the United Nations Covenants on Human Rights, ratified by most of the worlds countries. The covenants commit all nations to guarantee that their citizens shall enjoy the traditional formal rights; but they likewise pledge governments to make those rights meaningful in the real world by providing social security and cultural recognition to every person. This new book provides a systematic defence of social democracy for our contemporary global age. The authors argue that the claims to legitimation implicit in democratic theory can be honored only by social democracy; libertarian democracies are defective in failing to protect their citizens adequately against social, economic, and environmental risks that only collective action can obviate. Ultimately, social democracy provides both a fairer and more stable social order. But can social democracy survive in a world characterized by pervasive processes of globalization? This book asserts that globalization need not undermine social democracy if it is harnessed by international associations and leavened by principles of cultural respect, toleration, and enlightenment. The structures of social democracy must, in short, be adapted to the exigencies of globalization, as has already occurred in countries with the most successful social-democratic practices.

A Theory Of Intergenerational Justice written by Joerg Chet Tremmel and has been published by Earthscan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12 with Law categories.

This highly accessible book provides an extensive and comprehensive overview of current research and theory about why and how we should protect future generations. It exposes how and why the interests of people today and those of future generations are often in conflict and what can be done. It rebuts critical concepts such as Parfits' non-identity paradox and Beckerman's denial of any possibility of intergenerational justice. The core of the book is the lucid application of a veil of ignorance to derive principles of intergenerational justice which show that our duties to posterity are stronger than is often supposed. Tremmel's approach demands that each generation both consider and improve the well-being of future generations. To measure the well-being of future generations Tremmel employs the Human Development Index rather than the metrics of utilitarian subjective happiness. The book thus answers in detailed, concrete terms the two most important questions of every theory of intergenerational justice: what to sustain? and how much to sustain?

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: 2, University of Graz (Volkswirtschaftslehre), language: English, abstract: The thesis consists of two parts. The first part presents theoretical concepts of occupational mobility. The literature distinguishes between the horizontal re-sorting approach and the vertical one. In my opinion the vertical re-sorting approach reflects the real world more accurately. This approach allows for higher as well as for lower wage earnings of the workers after an occupational change. The second part contains an overview of occupational mobility rates, possible reasons for changing the occupation, and transitions matrices of occupational movements in other countries. However, the second part also looks at Austria: How does occupational mobility looks like in Austria? Do Austrian workers have preferences to move from one occupation to another? What are possible individual characteristics for the workers to undertake an occupational change? The thesis is structured as follows: Chapter 2 gives a literature review of publications mainly regarding occupational mobility but at some points, it also covers issues regarding jobs. Chapter 3 explains the concept of occupational movements. Chapter 4 gives an overview of theoretical concepts of occupational mobility. These concepts are grouped into two approaches, the horizontal and the vertical re-sorting approach. The horizontal re-sorting approach allows only movements upward the wage transition. Note that the wage transition explains changes of the received wages of the workers. In contrast, in the vertical re-sorting approach movements in both directions along the wage transition are possible. Chapter 5 summarizes the results about occupational mobility rates for some regions, such as Europe, Germany, France, the United States. The main purpose of chapter 6 is to discuss possible influences why a worker may undertake an occupational movement. Chapter 7 shows matrices that represent the occupational movements of the workers between occupation pairs. Chapter 8 presents my empirical analysis of the occupational mobility in Austria. Next, I investigate the occupational movements of the Austrian workers, in the understanding that an occupational movement is a concrete move from one occupation to a new occupation. After that, I perform an analysis of the influence of individual characteristics on an occupational movement, followed by an illustration of possible reasons why a currently employed worker would begin the search for another job.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: 1.0, , course: Development Economics, language: English, abstract: The study measures the level of technical efficiency and its determinants in Ethiopian garment factories. The study employs both Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) to compute the technical efficiency of Ethiopian garment factories and Tobit model to examine the determinant of technical inefficiency of the garment factories based on a data set of ninety four garment factories over the period of 2014-2015. The study used Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) to opt for the best function between Cobb-Douglas and Translog functions. The result reveals that Cobb-Douglas production functions better explains the production behavior of garment factories. The DEA estimation shows that the mean technical efficiency of garment factories was around to be 0.43 while such figure in SFA goes as high as 0.89 and the research indicated that export do not promote technical efficiency Ethiopian garment factories. The research indicated that DEA is more appropriate for small garment factors while SFA is more suitable to large and medium garment factories. The result from DEA model indicates that educational level of production manager, local fabric sourcing, collaboration with similar factories and membership status with Ethiopian textile and garment institute have positive contribution to efficiency. On the other hand wage rate of semi/unskilled labour, years of establishments, number of production line, educational level of the manager and size have a negative effect to efficiency. While the result from SFA indicates that wage rate of semi/unskilled, year of establishment, size and educational level of the manger have the positive contribution to technical efficiency. On the other hand owners citizenship and collaboration work with similar factories are a negative contribution to SFA technical efficiency. The research recommends that output can be increased by improving the technical efficiency of Ethiopian garment factories. To do so, for large and medium scale firms attention should be given to improve the wage rate of semi/unskilled labour, educational level of the managers and minimize collaboration with similar firms while educational level of the production manager, local fabric sourcing, collaboration with similar factories, and membership status of textile and garment institute should be improved for small firms.

Can Germany Be Saved written by Hans-Werner Sinn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-13 with Competition, Unfair categories.

A prominent economist argues in this German bestseller that Germany can rescue its sluggish economy by transforming its social welfare system and reforming its labor market and tax structure, offering insights into economic dilemmas experienced by all advanced economies in a time of globalization. What has happened to the German economic miracle? Rebuilding from the rubble and ruin of two world wars, Germany in the second half of the twentieth century recaptured its economic strength. High-quality German-made products ranging from precision tools to automobiles again conquered world markets, and the country experienced stratospheric growth and virtually full employment. Germany (or West Germany, until 1989) returned to its position as the economic powerhouse of Europe and became the world's third-largest economy after the United States and Japan. But in recent years growth has slowed, unemployment has soared, and the economic unification of eastern and western Germany has been mishandled. Europe's largest economy is now outperformed by many of its European neighbors in per capita terms. In Can Germany Be Saved?, Hans-Werner Sinn, one of Germany's leading economists, takes a frank look at his country's economic problems and proposes welfare- and tax-reform measures aimed at returning Germany to its former vigor and vitality. Germany invented the welfare state in the 1880s when Bismarck introduced government-funded health insurance, disability insurance, and pensions; the German system became a model for other industrialized countries. But, Sinn argues, today's German welfare state has incurred immense fiscal costs and destroyed economic incentives. Unemployment has become so lucrative that the private sector, already under pressure from international low-wage competitors, has increasing difficulties in paying sufficiently attractive wages. Sinn traces many of his country's economic problems to an increasingly intractable conflict between Germany's welfare state and the forces of globalization. Can Germany Be Saved? (an updated English-language version of a German bestseller) asks the hard questions--about unions, welfare payments, tax rates, the aging population, and immigration--that all advanced economies need to ask. Its answers, and its call for a radical rethinking of the welfare state, should stir debate and discussion everywhere.

The book gives an overview of the implications of population ageing on economic development and financial systems. It describes several challenges which the ageing process poses for central banks, giving special consideration to the situation in Europe. The first two chapters discuss the relationship between ageing and saving and between ageing and international capital flows. Other chapters consider the possible implications for financial markets. The final part raises issues which are of particular relevance for central banks, namely ageing and financial stability and how ageing will affect monetary policy.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück, language: English, abstract: Because of the high number of involuntary migrants who arrived in Germany over the past years, displaced people may at least partly counteract the economic consequences of the demographic change in Germany. Yet, particularly displaced women are comparatively seldom employed in Germany. What are the main obstacles for displaced women when they try to find an employment in Germany? How can these obstacles be overcome? In order to answer these questions, this paper will explore where the displaced women come from and what their reasons are to leave their countries of origin. It is also in the centre of interest what kind of qualifications they bring, with special regard to their educational background, professional experience and relevant language skills. Other questions to be addressed are whether displaced women want to be employed in Germany in the first place and what their future plans concerning residence, educational aspirations and employment are.

The story of personal debt in modern America Before the twentieth century, personal debt resided on the fringes of the American economy, the province of small-time criminals and struggling merchants. By the end of the century, however, the most profitable corporations and banks in the country lent money to millions of American debtors. How did this happen? The first book to follow the history of personal debt in modern America, Debtor Nation traces the evolution of debt over the course of the twentieth century, following its transformation from fringe to mainstream—thanks to federal policy, financial innovation, and retail competition. How did banks begin making personal loans to consumers during the Great Depression? Why did the government invent mortgage-backed securities? Why was all consumer credit, not just mortgages, tax deductible until 1986? Who invented the credit card? Examining the intersection of government and business in everyday life, Louis Hyman takes the reader behind the scenes of the institutions that made modern lending possible: the halls of Congress, the boardrooms of multinationals, and the back rooms of loan sharks. America's newfound indebtedness resulted not from a culture in decline, but from changes in the larger structure of American capitalism that were created, in part, by the choices of the powerful—choices that made lending money to facilitate consumption more profitable than lending to invest in expanded production. From the origins of car financing to the creation of subprime lending, Debtor Nation presents a nuanced history of consumer credit practices in the United States and shows how little loans became big business.
