This carefully crafted ebook: “Demons (The Possessed / The Devils) - The Unabridged Garnett Translation” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Demons is an 1872 novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Though titled The Possessed in the initial English translation, Dostoyevsky scholars and later translations favour the titles The Devils or Demons. An extremely political book, Demons is a testimonial of life in Imperial Russia in the late 19th century. As the revolutionary democrats begin to rise in Russia, different ideologies begin to collide. Dostoyevsky casts a critical eye on both the liberal idealists, portraying their ideas and ideological foundation as demonic, and the conservative establishment's ineptitude in dealing with those ideas and their social consequences. The entire novel takes place in a small town outside of Petersberg and is narrated by a man named Mr. Govorov. Mr. Govorov does not witness every conversation first hand, but nonetheless the narrator describes the story as if he partook in every situation or as a chronicler, who had the events described to him. We know very little of Mr. Govorov, except that he is a close friend of Stephan Trofimovich. Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky ( 1821 – 1881) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist and philosopher. Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the context of the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia. Many literary critics rate him as one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature.

The most openly political of Dostoevsky's four major novels, The Devils has left literary scholars intrigued with its difficult narrative structure which veers back and forth between first and third person, and fascinated by the political overtones and social commentary it includes. For these reasons, The Devils often anchors courses on Dostoevsky's works. This critical companion contains essays that shed light on both the tricky literary structure of the novel as well as its social and political components.

In "Demons (The Possessed / The Devils)", Fyodor Dostoevsky delves into the psychological and moral decay of Russian society in the 1860s, weaving a complex narrative that explores radicalism, nihilism, and the struggle for meaning in a rapidly changing world. Written in a rich, multi-layered literary style, the novel employs a blend of dark humor and profound philosophical discourse, echoing the existential anxieties that permeated the era. The unabridged Garnett translation captures the novel's intricate characterizations and social critiques, embodying Dostoevsky's masterful storytelling while offering a vivid portrayal of his era's tumultuous political climate. Dostoevsky himself experienced the tumult of 19th-century Russia firsthand, having endured incarceration and exile due to his political affiliations. His encounters with the radical ideologies of his time, coupled with personal tragedies, significantly shaped his views on morality, faith, and the human condition. "Demons" serves as a dramatic exploration of these themes, demonstrating Dostoevsky's deep engagement with the sociopolitical dynamics of his age, and reflecting his belief in the necessity of spiritual redemption amidst chaos. This essential read is not only a gripping narrative but also a profound philosophical exploration that invites readers to grapple with fundamental questions about belief, morality, and humanity. Recommended for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, psychology, and political philosophy, "Demons" is an enduring classic that continues to provoke thought and debate.

Raskolnikov is an impoverished former student living in Saint Petersburg, Russia who feels compelled to rob and murder Alyona Ivanovna, an elderly pawn broker and money lender. After much deliberation the young man sneaks into her apartment and commits the murder. In the chaos of the crime Raskolnikov fails to steal anything of real value, the primary purpose of his actions to begin with. In the period that follows Raskolnikov is racked with guilt over the crime that he has committed and begins to worry excessively about being discovered. His guilt begins to manifest itself in physical ways. He falls into a feverish state and his actions grow increasingly strange almost as if he subconsciously wishes to be discovered. As suspicion begins to mount towards him, he is ultimately faced with the decision as to how he can atone for the heinous crime that he has committed, for it is only through this atonement that he may achieve some psychological relief. As is common with Dostoyevsky's work, the author brilliantly explores the psychology of his characters, providing the reader with a deeper understanding of the motivations and conflicts that are central to the human condition. First published in 1866, "Crime and Punishment" is one of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's most famous novels, and to this day is regarded as one of the true masterpieces of world literature. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, is translated by Constance Garnett, and includes an Introduction by Nathan B. Fagin.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 'Stavrogin's Confession and The Plan of the Life of a Great Sinner' is a compelling narrative that masterfully interweaves psychological depth with a sociopolitical critique. Situated in the literary tradition of the great Russian novel, Dostoyevsky's work probes the tumultuous undercurrents of a city on the brink of revolution, crafting a rich tapestry of character, philosophy, and existential angst. The piece is both a fragment of a larger text and a standalone work of art, demonstrating Dostoyevsky's intricate style and his profound insights into the human condition within the literary context of 19th-century Russia, an era marked by social upheaval and the quest for political transformation. Dostoyevsky, a literary giant, was acutely conscious of the social and moral questions festering at the heart of Russian society. His insight into the spiritual and intellectual struggles of his age arose not merely from observation but also from his own personal turmoil, including his experiences with political imprisonment and exile. This work arguably encapsulates Dostoyevsky's continued exploration of themes such as sin, redemption, and the psychological complexity of the human soul, which are recurrent throughout his oeuvre and reflect his lifelong wrestling with the dichotomies of good and evil. 'Readers intrigued by the moral psychology of characters ensconced in a society on the precipice of radical change will find 'Stavrogin's Confession and The Plan of the Life of a Great Sinner' particularly engrossing. It offers not just a window into the soul of its troubled protagonist but also a mirror reflecting the perennial conflicts of human society. Dostoyevsky's work remains as relevant today as it was in its own time, providing invaluable insights and rich fodder for readers and scholars dedicated to understanding the multifaceted nature of humanity. This book comes highly recommended to those who appreciate the gravity of classical literature and the inexhaustible debates surrounding personal and collective identity.
