TRW has been developing low noise microwave parametric amplifiers with Josephson junction SQUIDs (Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices). This report summarizes the second phase of the program which includes measurement of the amplifier performance at X-band, and design and fabrication of a SQUID array amplifier. We have demonstrated gain in excess of 10 dB at 8.4 GHz and a measured noise temperature equal to 6K with an uncertainty of (+15/-7)K. Arrays with both 25 and 50 elements and a 50 ohm impedance have been designed and fabricated. These arrays should increase the dynamic range of the amplifier. (Author).

This is the first Annual Report of an effort to demonstrate a low noise superconducting microwave amplifier. The amplifier is a nearly degenerate, single idler parametric amplifier which uses the nonlinear inductance of a single junction SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device). The design frequency is 9 GHz, 10 dB gain, and 16% bandwidth. In order to maximize the saturation power, the device impedance was chosen near 1ohm and a matching network was designed to transform to 50ohm. In later designs, a coherent array of SQUIDs is expected to increase the power and impedance. This report includes the design and test of the 50ohm to 1ohm broadband transformer, design and fabrication of the SQUID amplifier, and both saturation and noise analyses of the single SQUID and SQUID array. The analytical results, reported to the 1982 Applied Superconductivity Conference are: the noise temperature of the single SQUID parametric amplifier is equal to the amplifier termination temperature T(o), the response is linear to several percent of the flux quantum energy in the SQUID: the amplifier will be saturated by broad band noise if the noise source temperature is much greater than 10 To; and the array parametric amplifier has the same noise temperature as the single device indicating an N-fold increase in dynamic range. The science of superconducting electronics was first developed over forty years ago, fifty years after the discovery of superconductivity. Since then, a wide range of applications has emerged, and more are envisaged within this ever expanding and exciting field. SQUIDs, the Josephson Effects and Superconducting Electronics chronicles this development from fundamental principles to the present work with high-temperature superconductors. The book discusses superconductivity, Josephson effects, and detectors of unparalleled sensitivity such as SQUIDs. It punctuates theory with practical discussions on how to harness this new science. This complete guide to the subject is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers with a specific interest in this field. It also provides guidance to those working in areas of industry where superconducting electronics could be applied.

The Squid Handbook written by John Clarke and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-03-06 with Science categories.

This two-volume handbook offers a comprehensive and well coordinated presentation of SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices), including device fundamentals, design, technology, system construction and multiple applications. It is intended to bridge the gap between fundamentals and applications, and will be a valuable textbook reference for graduate students and for professionals engaged in SQUID research and engineering. It will also be of use to specialists in multiple fields of practical SQUID applications, from human brain research and heart diagnostics to airplane and nuclear plant testing to prospecting for oil, minerals and buried ordnance. The first volume contains chapters presenting the theory of SQUIDs, their fabrication from low- and high-temperature superconductors, the necessary readout electronics, and the design and performance of practical direct current (dc) and radio-frequency (rf) SQUIDs. This volume concludes with an overview of the most important SQUID system issues. An appendix summarizes briefly the foundations of superconductivity that are necessary to understand SQUIDs. A glossary and tables of units and constants are also included. The second volume of the handbook will deal with applications of SQUIDs and SQUID systems.

This volume is based on the proceedings of the NATO-sponsored Advanced Studies Institute (ASn on The New Superconducting Electronics (held 9-20 August 1992 in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire USA). The contents herein are intended to provide an update to an earlier volume on the same subject (based on a NATO ASI held in 1988). Four years seems a relatively short time interval, and our title itself, featuring The New Superconducting Electronics, may appear somewhat pretentious. Nevertheless, we feel strongly that the ASI fostered a timely reexamination of the technical progress and application potential of this rapid-paced field. There are, indeed, many new avenues for technological innovation which were not envisioned or considered possible four years ago. The greatest advances by far have occurred with regard to oxide superconductors, the so-called high transition-temperature superconductors, known in short as HTS. These advances are mainly in the ability to fabricate both (1) high-quality, relatively large-area films for microwave filters and (2) multilayer device structures, principally superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions, for superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) magnetometers. Additionally, we have seen the invention and development of the flux-flow transistor, a planar three-terminal device. During the earlier ASI only the very first HTS films with adequate critical-current density had just been fabricated, and these were of limited area and had high resistance for microwave current.
