El político y orador Demóstenes (384-322 a.C.) nos ha dejado en las cuatro Filípicas una obra maestra de la oratoria de todos los tiempos. Fueron pronunciadas contra el poderoso rey Filipo de Macedonia -padre de Alejandro Magno-, quien a los ojo de de Demóstenes representaba una fuerza bárbara y antidemocrática que amenazaba el marco de libertades del que hasta ese momento habían disfrutado las ciudades griegas. Los discursos, dirigidos a los atenienses y a los griegos en su conjunto, constituyen el último -y más vehemente- intento para que reaccionen, unan fuerzas y se enfrenten contra Filipo. El texto crítico de la presente edición, establecido por F.G. Hernández Muñoz, catedrático de Filología Griega e la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, tiene por primera vez en cuanta todos los papiros publicados hasta la fecha, así como los manuscritos griegos conservados en España, otros manuscritos tardíos y una abundante tradición indirecta. La extensa introducción (sobre la vida y obra de Demóstenes y su valoración como orador, escritor y estadista) y la traducción con sus correspondientes notas han sido elaboradas por F. García Romero, también catedrático en la misma Universidad. Complementan la obra un apéndice sobre la transmisión del testo en los manuscritos hispánicos, una biografía y un índice de nombre propios.
