The unconventional autobiography of the Pulitzer Prize–winnning, bestselling author—"the most vigorous and truthful of American writers" (Newsday)—who reshaped our idea of fiction. A work of compelling candor and inventiveness, instructive particularly in its revelation of the interplay between life and art. Philip Roth concentrates on five episodes from his life: his secure city childhood in the thirties and forties; his education in American life at a conventional college; his passionate entanglement, as an ambitious young man, with the angriest person he ever met (the "girl of my dreams" Roth calls her); his clash, as a fledgling writer, with a Jewish establishment outraged by Goodbye, Columbus; and his discovery, in the excesses of the sixties, of an unmined side to his talent that led him to write Portnoy's Complaint. The book concludes surprisingly—in true Rothian fashion—with a sustained assault by the novelist against his proficiencies as an autobiographer.

Preserving The Hunger written by Isaac Rosenfeld and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Literary Criticism categories.

Isaac Rosenfeld, who died in 1956 at the age of thirty-eight, was a brilliant and original writer whose work has unfortunately become unavailable to anyone but the scholar. A gifted member of a gifted generation, his writings shine with the hard light of a burning and troubled intelligence. Though Rosenfeld was a man quintessentially of his era, grappling with issues and books that may no longer engage us, his writing remains fresh because of his commitment to striking deep and remaining open to experience, with all the risks entailed thereby. In the contemporary climate of academic thought, we are badly in need of teachers like Rosenfeld who read books no differently than they conduct their lives--with the belief that the world of the phrase can do more than make a point or strike a pose, but rather can, through intensity, poise, and grace, give meaning to life.

We live in a world of hyper specialism, losing context and our connection to the surrounding region breaks down. The expertise we valued so highly has served to narrow and shorten our vision. It has blinded us to potential and opportunity. This book argues that there is the need and place for both specialist and the generalist. Currently, it feels the balance is tipped too far towards specialism, which results in too much blinkered decision-making. The authors call for people to develop into generalists. These are people who possess both a breadth and depth of skills, knowledge and experience. These are most definitely not 'jack of all trades, masters of none'. Rather, they are people who have the potential, the attitude and the aptitude to specialise in more than one discipline, and are adept at navigating the digital, networked world we inhabit today.

The Long Peace Of East Asia written by Professor Timo Kivimäki and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-28 with Political Science categories.

The annual number of battle deaths from interstate and intra-state conflicts in East Asia has declined by 95% since 1979. During the past three decades, East Asia has been more peaceful than Europe, the Americas or any continent, in terms of battle deaths per capita. When generating theories on peace and war, studies almost never look at the experiences of East Asia. Yet the region by focusing on a commitment to development, is a social reality that is less paranoid, less militaristic and more cooperative. Since 1979 there has been a commonly accepted rule to keep domestic issues domestic so that external military interference, that often caused the majority of battle deaths, was not needed. Thus the emergence of the long peace of East Asia is historically specific, and cannot be generalized by studying objective, material conditions independent of common perceptions and common interpretations. This does not mean that the East Asian experience is not relevant for other regions in the world, but that generalizations should not be attempted to be drawn from the material conditions, but rather from the lived experience and socially constructed realities of East Asia. Since East Asia is a spectacular case of pacification, and since it has not contributed much to our theories of peace and conflict, The Long Peace of East Asia is an important book for studies on peace and war.
