For this reason virtual representation of landscape processes is gaining increasing importance in planning.The Thematic Synthesis Report V of the National Research Programme 48 "Landscapes and Habitats of the Alps" shows the potential of computer-based models and visualizations for spatial and landscape planning and examines the current state of research. The models developed within NRP 48 deal with the most important issues in spatial and landscape planning in the Alps ¿ mechanisms and landscape changes through changing agricultural use patterns, tourism and intensive settlement development, and changes in the natural hazards potential due to global warming. Synthesis Report V throws light on chances and obstacles of models and visualizations in planning practice and demonstrates how the formulation of use cases facilitates the development and improvement of computer-based models and the corresponding software for the world of practice.

Die Alpenlandschaften der Schweiz sind nicht nur Wohn- und Lebensraum für eineinhalb Millionen Menschen und natürliche Ressource für die alpine Land- und Forstwirtschaft. Sie sind auch eine wesentliche Grundlage für den Tourismus und generell ein zentrales Element der Marke "Schweiz", Quelle für Identität und Heimatgefühl und ein Hot Spot der Biodiversität. Um sicherzustellen, dass die alpinen Landschaften und Lebensräume die vielfältigen Ansprüche, die an sie gestellt werden, auch künftig erfüllen können, muss ihnen deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit zuteilwerden. Sie sind nicht länger als selbstverständliches Nebenprodukt der verschiedenen Nutzungen zu betrachten, sondern als eines der Hauptprodukte des Alpenraumes, das entsprechend zu behandeln ist. Dies verlangt eine räumliche Strategie, die auf den Potenzialen der Regionen aufbaut, und damit eine Abkehr vom "überall alles". Gefordert ist auch mehr Kohärenz in der Landschaftspolitik auf allen Ebenen, eine stärkere Verknüpfung öffentlicher Transfergelder mit Leistungen zugunsten von Kollektivgütern, aber auch ein neues Verständnis der Solidarität zwischen dem Alpenraum und den urbanen Gebieten. Auf der Basis des Nationalen Forschungsprogramms 48 "Landschaften und Lebensräume der Alpen" (NFP 48) reflektiert das Buch Voraussetzungen und Anforderungen für eine nachhaltige Landschaftsentwicklung im schweizerischen Alpenraum und vermittelt Denkanstösse und Empfehlungen für Politik und Praxis. Mit umfangreicher Literaturliste zu den Projekten des NFP 48 sowie einer entsprechenden CD.
