High-tech Architecture - Preserving the Heritage of Innovative Construction The high-tech architecture of the 1970s–1990s is typically characterized by the use and exhibition of advanced technologies. In terms of appearance, these buildings often have innovative façades, supporting structures accentuated in color, and expressively displayed technology systems. Unfortunately, however, the rapid obsolescence of technology has often led to the complete replacement of the very systems that defined the architectural form. In 2023, an international conference at ETH Zurich in collaboration with Bauhaus-Universität Weimar explored the question of how best to deal with the structural legacy of technologically innovative architecture. This book summarizes the results and provides an overview of the current state of research. Current state of research on high-tech architecture and its conservation Overview of the opportunities and challenges of high-tech buildings New findings on the topic of building within existing structures Also available as a set with the congress volume Denkmal Postmoderne 978-3-0356-2783-1

The Architectural Heritage of Postmodernism - Current State of Research on Architecture and Monument Preservation The architectural heritage of postmodernism bears witness to an era that was defined by the energy crises of the 1970s, the return to architecture as a means of communication and a conduit of meaning, neoliberalism in the construction sector, the end of grand narratives, and the spirit of optimism in the early 1990s. Focusing on the German-speaking world, this volume reveals how this heritage can be captured, preserved and further developed. It includes contributions from the conference of the same name, which took place in Weimar in March 2022 in collaboration with ETH Zurich. The authors shed light on the theoretical and practical challenges of dealing with an era that is subject to a wide range of qualitative perceptions and is - as its name suggests - still ongoing. Current state of research on postmodern architecture and its preservation New findings on the topic of building within existing structures Research reports in German with English summaries of each Also available as a set with the congress volume High-Tech Heritage 978-3-0356-2784-8

Interventions And Adaptive Reuse written by Liliane Wong and has been published by Birkhaüser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-31 with categories.

Adaptive reuse is a design practice where changes in the building structure go along with new programs and functions. Many concerns of the day that are the hallmark of current social discourse can equally be communicated through the vocabulary of design and reuse. Six common themes mirroring those of society in the new millennium are discernable in the current adaptive reuse practice: appropriation, ecology, equity, memory & redemption, identity and authenticity. Selected articles from the IntAR Interventions and Adaptive Reuse Journal of the last ten years speak to the social issues of the recent decade. The introductory essay positions shifting norms of working from home or remote learning in the light of their revision through adaptive reuse, for example the post-pandemic repercussions on office towers and the classroom.

Building in existing fabric requires more than practical solutions and stylistic skills. The adaptive reuse of buildings, where changes in the structure go along with new programs and functions, poses the fundamental question of how the past should be included in the design for the future. On the background of long years of teaching and publishing, and using vivid imagery from Frankenstein to Rem Koolhaas and beyond, the author provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural design for adaptive reuse projects. History and theory, building typology, questions of materials and construction, aspects of preservation, urban as well as interior design are dealt with in ways that allow to approach adaptive reuse as a design practice field of its own right.

Settlement areas today can no longer be aptly described as either "urban" or "rural". We now live in sprawling conglomerations, collages of urban, suburban, and rural elements. New political solutions need to be found, challenging the institutional framework of federalism and the concept of local government. Commissioned by the foundation 'avenir suisse' (Think Tank for Economic and Social Issues), this publication gathers contributions by experts from the fields of sociology, geography, politics, economics and architecture, including Winy Maas' (MVRDV) vision for a Switzerland of the future. Whilst focusing on Switzerland as a case study, this book is a thought-provoking report on the gradual changes taking place in all industrialised countries. Angelus Eisinger teaches at the Department of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Michael Schneider is the project leader at 'avenir suisse'.

A comprehensive look at the eagerly anticipated New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece, and the celebrated collection it houses. Marking the opening of the New Acropolis Museum, this book examines both its architecture and the archaeological treasures it was built to house. The building addresses the dramatic complexities of the collection and the site with minimalist simplicity by using three main materials—glass, stainless steel, and concrete. "There’s no way at the beginning of the twenty-first century you can try to imitate even superficially the art of 2,500 years ago," Tschumi says. The "precision of the concept was really what counted." The book provides an in-depth look at the creation of the building, set only 280 meters from the Parthenon, as well as the restoration, preservation, and housing of its exhibits through over 200 photographs, drawings, and texts.
