Wer die Grundlagenprobleme der modernen Mathematik verstehen will, muß sich zuerst mit der Geschichte der Mathematik befassen. Der Sinn des modernen Formalismus etwa geht einem an den Schwierigkeiten auf, die der klassischen Konzeption vom Wesen der Mathematik im 19. Jahr hundert erwuchs. Es ist aber für den modernen Mathematiker nicht so ganz leicht, einen Zugang zur Geschichte seiner Wissenschaft zu finden. Die meisten Schriften zu diesem Thema sind um eine umfassende und nichts Wichtiges übersehende Darstellung bemüht. Auf diese Weise nehmen in den dünnen Büchern die Aufzählungen von Namen und Jahreszahlen einen relativ breiten Raum ein. Aber auch in den weiter angelegten Schriften kann über die Leistungen der einzelnen Forscher immer nur einigermaßen summarisch berichtet werden. Es erscheint deshalb der Versuch berechtigt, die gewiß wichtigen und unentbehrlichen Gesamtdarstellungen (einer Zeit, einer Persönlichkeit) durch einen andersartigen Zugang zur Geschichte der Mathematik zu ergänzen. Wir verzichten ausdrücklich auf Vollständigkeit und wollen versuchen, an einzelnen ausführlicher dargestellten Exempeln die Denk weise der Mathematiker vergangener Jahrhunderte lebendig werden zu lassen.

Set theory has been widely adopted in mathematics and philosophy, but the controversy surrounding it at the turn of the century remains of great interest.
