Savie, coraggiose, determinate, volitive, indipendenti, intraprendenti, forti, ribelli ma anche avide, vanitose, misogine, sottomesse. Boccaccio apre il sipario su una multiforme tipologia di caratteri e di comportamenti femminili e mostra alle donne, ossia alle proprie lettrici d’elezione, come sono, come possono essere (e come potrebbero essere se godessero di più libertà e di più potere...), come devono non essere. Al termine delle dieci giornate, a peste non ancora conclusa, l’autore affida alla sua brigata di giovani novellatrici e novellatori (formata per il 70% da donne) la rifondazione del mondo post-epidemico, da rimettere in ordine e da reinventare sulla base dei pre-umanistici valori dell’amore, dei piaceri terreni, della voglia di vivere, dell’arguzia, del sorriso e del riso, di una auspicata pari dignità fra i generi. Il presente saggio prende in esame – oltre al Proemio dell’opera – cinque figure femminili: Bartolomea, Giletta, Ghismonda, Filippa, Griselda. Le analizza una a una per poi raffrontarle tra loro e con altre, in un continuo gioco di connessioni e di rimandi interni, così da ricomporre gli svariati e variopinti tasselli di un cangiante universo al femminile. Ne risulta una lettura inedita del capolavoro boccacciano, con lo sguardo attento a ciò che il Decameron può dirci oggi, soprattutto a chi lo accosti senza pregiudizi.
