Menghayati alam perasaan merupakan bagian hakiki dari kehidupan manusia yang tidak kalah artinya jika dibandingkan dengan kebutuhan vital seperti makan dan minum. Manusia sebagai makhluk sosial saling memerlukan dalam ketergantungan. Mungkin ada pula yang tidak sependapat, merasa dirinya tidakperlu tergantung pada manusia lain dan tidak perlu berperasaan. Kehidupan alam perasaan merupakan bagian tidak terpisahkan dari dinamika komunikasi interpersonal, dalam kehidupan sosial. Meskipun perkembangannya sangat individual, berbeda antara satu orang dengan lainnya, namun ada persamaan kualifikasi yang penting dan tidak dapat dipungkiri di dalam tatanan kehidupan sosial tersebut. Penyimpangan sedikit saja – apalagi yang lebih berat – dapat menyebabkan berbagai hendaya ataupun kendala dalam kehidupan (gangguan dalam menjalankan peran atau fungsi sosialnya). Depresi merupakan salah satu bentuk sindrom gangguan keseimbangan mood (suasana perasaan) yang sangat umum terjadi. Memang tidak semua kondisi depresi harus dikategorikan sebagai gangguan sakit. Ada yang pencetusnya jelas dan dapat teratasi sendiri. Adapula yang meskipun pencetusnya jelas, namun gejala atau sindrom depresinya berkepanjangan. Demikian dekatnya hal tersebut dengan kehidupan sehari-hari, sehingga sering tidak dianggap sebagai suatu ‘penyakit’ atau ‘kondisi sakit’. Tidak jarang kondisi depresif tersebut terabaikan atau tidak terdiagnosis, karena seringkali gejala atau keluhan yang muncul adalah keluhan fisik tanpa penyebab yang jelas. Hal tersebut sangat merugikan individu, karena depresi merupakan salah satu penyebab memburuknya prognosis pada komorbiditas penyakit lain. Depresi juga meningkatkan risiko kematian baik melalui penyakit lain maupun akibat tindakan bunuh-diri, menyebabkan berbagai disabilitas atau penurunan kemampuan fungsional serta penurunan kualitas hidup. Gangguan depresi dan gangguan mood pada umumnya sering menyertai, bahkan dapat menjadi pemicu untuk penyakit medik lain (misalnya kanker, diabetes melitus, stroke, infark jantung, dsb), dan mempersulit pengobatan maupun proses kesembuhan. Dalam kaitan hal tersebut, WHO telah memprediksikan depresi akan menjadi masalah gangguan kesehatan utama pada tahun 2020. Sampai pertengahan abad yang lalu pendekatan dan penanganan depresi masih lebih berorietasi pada aspek psikososial dan psikoanalitik. Sejak ditemukannya berbagai obat psikofarmaka – khususnya antidepresin dan antipsikotik – aspek biologi mulai mendapat perhatian yang serius. Bahkan melalui perkembangan berbagai obat antidepresan, pengetahuan mengenai peran berbagai neurotransmitter berkembang pesat, termasuk dalam memahami berbagai kondisi gangguan psikiatrik lainnya. Makin banyak yang terungkap dalam perkembangan psikiatri biologi, makin kompleks pula tantangan dalam memahami berbagai gangguan psikiatrik. Diterbitkannya buku ini merupakan hal yang sangat penting dalam ikhtiar meningkatkan kesadaran dan pengertian terhadap depresi – khususnya di kalangan tenaga medis – agar di masa mendatang masalah terkait gangguan depresi ini dapat ditangani dengan lebih baik dan mendasar. Pendekatan aspek neurobiologi merupakan bagian yang terus berkembang dan sangat penting dalam memahami psikopatologi dan peran psikofarmaka pada berbagai gangguan depresi.
