Depression was formally designated as a psychiatric disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III), published in 1980, yet there remains no consensus with respect to depression's underlying cause. Two broad models of causation have been historically used to characterize depression: biophysiological dysfunction or psychogenic processes. Interviews with psychiatric professionals reveal that this polarized causal view of depression pervades contemporary clinical attitudes, in terms of biological or developmental-psychological explanations. It has become increasingly clear that science alone cannot exhaust how we explain human behavior, and phenomenological philosophy permits us to investigate and describe depression beyond the binary model of causation. Existential-phenomenological philosophy broadly espouses that scientific investigations of depression fail to recognize that causal explanations are only possible by abstracting from the lived-experience of the disorder. The philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Erwin Straus demonstrate that all experience presupposes a relationship between the self and the world, a relationship that is effaced by scientific abstraction. Accordingly, a robust understanding of depression must attempt to draw out the way in which selfhood is a necessary feature of depressed experience. A phenomenological analysis of perception reveals that selfhood is a developmental and embodied style; a self-style. Subsequently, psychotherapy should be characterized as an existential project, the aim of which is to disclose how the depression inhibits the ability to be oneself.

Nearly every depressed person is assured by doctors, well-meaning friends and family, the media, and ubiquitous advertisements that the underlying problem is a chemical imbalance. Such a simple defect should be fixable, yet despite all of the resources that have been devoted to finding a pharmacological solution, depression remains stubbornly widespread. Why are we losing this fight? In this humane and illuminating challenge to defect models of depression, psychologist Jonathan Rottenberg argues that depression is a particularly severe outgrowth of our natural capacity for emotion. In other words, it is a low mood gone haywire. Drawing on recent developments in the science of mood—and his own harrowing depressive experience as a young adult—Rottenberg explains depression in evolutionary terms, showing how its dark pull arises from adaptations that evolved to help our ancestors ensure their survival. Moods, high and low, evolved to compel us to more efficiently pursue rewards. While this worked for our ancestors, our modern environment—in which daily survival is no longer a sole focus—makes it all too easy for low mood to slide into severe, long-lasting depression. Weaving together experimental and epidemiological research, clinical observations, and the voices of individuals who have struggled with depression, The Depths offers a bold new account of why depression endures—and makes a strong case for de-stigmatizing this increasingly common condition. In so doing, Rottenberg offers hope in the form of his own and other patients’ recovery, and points the way towards new paths for treatment.

Understand depression in yourself and others: What causes it? What unseen mental processes are raging within it? And what is required to cure or overcome it? Why does a loving relationship between two mature adults normally lead, after its breakup, only to regular and healthy sadness; while an ambivalent, love-hate relationship between two adolescents, or those with the mentality of adolescents, more often end in a pathological, self-hating depression? This classic psychological paradox, observed first by Freud, essentially launched the psychology of depression. By delving into his own experience of depression, produced by the breakup of his first adolescent relationship, Roman Gelperin decisively answers this question. With unreserved honesty and rigorous detail, he introspectively analyzes the cause, hidden psychology, and surprising cure of his own depression. And by joining his self-analysis with a thorough review of the leading research, as well as collected accounts of other people's depressions, he presents a groundbreaking new understanding of the little-known causes, mental processes, and potential cures of depression in general. This book covers the following: A detailed overview of what's currently known about depression Cases in which depression is an appropriate reaction The different types of depression, and the remedy each requires Depression as an adaptive function in animals that possess social status Psychedelic drugs as a new, powerful treatment for certain types of depression By the end of this book, you'll have a rich understanding of depression and the psychology behind it.
