The group of European Medical Research Councils (EMRC) was formed in 1971 and became a Standing Committee of the European Science Foundation (ESF) in 1975. EMRC is an association of medical research councils or equivalent organizations in Western Europe. The National Institutes of Health, the Israel Academy of Sciences and the European Office of WHO are associated with EMRC and take an active part in EMRC activities. The main aims of EMRC are to exchange information on the research policies pursued by its member organizations and to initiate and stimulate international cooperation in biomedical research. Since biomedical research is highly international in itself, EMRC concentrates its activities on furthering international collaboration in those fields where it can play a significant role as a complement to existing channels. Mental illness research has been judged by EMRC to fulfill these criteria. After a survey of the activities of the member organizations in mental illness research, EMRC decided in 1978 to set up a study group to look for areas within this field to which EMRC could contribute. As a result of the work of the study group, four work shops have been arranged to define present knowledge in some specific areas and to delineate research needs. The present volume contains the proceedings of the fourth workshop, held in 1985 and dealing with the course and outcome of depressive illness. EMRC hopes that this volume will stimulate intensified research and research cooperation on mental illnesses.

Das Wort „Depression“ leitet sich von dem lateinischen „depremire“ ab und bedeutet so viel wie „niederdrücken“. Es wird vermutet, dass weltweit ungefähr 350 Millionen Menschen von Depressionen betroffen sind. Bei ihren Forschungen konnten sie eine Vielzahl an Datenmaterialien sammeln und auswerten, die bis dahin noch nicht bekannt waren.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2022 im Fachbereich Psychologie - Klinische Psychologie, Psychopathologie, Prävention, Note: 1,0, Hamburger Fern-Hochschule, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In Deutschland erkranken laut der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik und Nervenheilkunde e.V. (2021) jährlich 27,8 Prozent der Erwachsenen an psychischen Erkrankungen. Das entspricht 17,8 Millionen Menschen. Die häufigsten Erkrankungen sind Angststörungen (15,4%) und affektive Störungen, die in unipolare Depression (9,8%) und bipolare Depression (8,2%) unterteilt werden (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik und Nervenheilkunde e.V., 2021). Damit zählen psychische Erkrankungen zu den vier wichtigsten Ursachen für Einschränkungen in der Gesundheit und verringern die Lebenserwartung von Betroffenen um ungefähr 10 Jahre (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik und Nervenheilkunde e.V., 2021). Die Jahre 2020 und 2021 waren aufgrund der Covid-19-Pandemie einschneidende Jahre in vielen Bereichen des alltäglichen Lebens. Daher beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit mit den Einflüssen der Pandemie auf depressive Erkrankungen. Dabei geht sie auf die Neuerkrankungen in Deutschland ein und behandelt nicht die möglichen Veränderungen bei bereits erkrankten Patientinnen und Patienten. Dafür wird zu Beginn ein Grundstein für das Verständnis dieser Erkrankung gelegt und das Krankheitsbild beschrieben sowie die Prävalenz und die Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren dargestellt. Darauf folgt die Darlegung der Lage vor der Covid-19-Pandemie und die Veränderungen durch diese. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse diskutiert und münden in einen Ausblick.

Eine Depression ist, anders als eine rein physische Krankheit, nicht sofort erkennbar, schwieriger diagnostizierbar und in ihrer Heilung langwierig, begrenzt und kompliziert. Dadurch reagiert das soziale Umfeld einer erkrankten Person häufig inadäquat oder zieht sich von der Person zurück. Die Depression ist eine Störung der Gemütslage. Die Abgrenzung einer depressiven Erkrankung zu normalen Verstimmungen erfolgt anhand der Dauer, Art und Intensität der Beschwerden. Meist liegen einer Depression mehrere Ursachen zugrunde. Biologische, psychische und soziale Komponenten spielen bei ihrer Entstehung zusammen. Die Erkrankungswahrscheinlichkeit hängt von der genetischen Grundausstattung eines Menschen sowie von seelischen Belastungen ab.

Somatically ill patients often also suffer from psychological symptoms.
