Für schwungvollen, heiteren Familienzündstoff ist also bei aller Herzenswärme unserer Titelheldin jederzeit gesorgt! »Du, Luise, schau mal wer da kommt.« Die Berger-Heidi zeigte mit einer Kopfbewegung aus dem Fenster. Luise, die Seniorwirtin des Bergerhofs tat einen Schritt zur Seite und sah hinaus. Ein alter Mann kam mit schweren Schritten einen schmalen Pfad herunter, seine Sachen waren abgetragen und er selbst wirkte eher verwahrlost. »Ja Herrschaftseiten, der Flori«, murmelte Luise. Es war halb zehn am Vormittag und sie war mit ihrer Schwiegertochter Heidi in der Küche des Bergerhofs, um das Mittagessen vorzubereiten, zu dem sie heute mehr Gäste als sonst erwarteten. »Er schaut net besonders gut aus«, sagte Heidi, »soll ich mal nach ihm schauen?« »Nein, laß mal«, antwortete Luise, »das mach' ich schon.« Dann wischte sie sich die Hände an einem Tuch ab und verließ die Küche, um den alten Mann in Empfang zu nehmen. Florian Winderdaler war vor einem Monat zweiundachtzig geworden, war jahrelang Senn auf der Bragner-Alm gewesen und seit zwei Jahren zog er von Hof zu Hof, um ein Dach über dem Kopf zu haben und etwas zu essen zu bekommen. Bis zu seinem achtzigsten Lebensjahr war er jeden Sommer auf der Alm gewesen, hatte dort seinen Dienst getan, um im Winter hinunter zu seinem Bauern auf den Bragner-Hof zu gehen und dort auszuharren, bis der nächste Sommer kam. Während dieser Zeit hatte der Flori auf dem Hof stets kleinere Arbeiten erledigt. Bis der Bragner-Andi den Hof übernommen und Flori Winderdalers Art der Überwinterung unterbunden hatte. »Du bist jetzt zu alt«, hatte er gesagt, »such bei der Gemeinde an, daß du einen Platz im Heim bekommst.« Der Flori hatte sich geschämt, als er bei der Gemeinde nach einem Heimplatz fragen sollte, weil jeder Senn bei dem Bauern, für den er jahrelang gearbeitet hatte, ein lebenslanges Einsitzrecht auf dem Hof hatte, das war ungeschriebenes Gesetz und galt gleichermaßen für Magd und Knecht. Nur für den Bragner-Andi schien das nicht zu gelten.
