The Commentary on the Categories by Abū l-Farağ ibn aṭ-Ṭayyib is an important representative of the Aristotelian tradition in Arabic culture. Formally based on late antique commentaries on Aristotle's Categories, it provides the last example of the learned tradition still alive in eleventh-century Baghdad. The introduction offers a general survey of the commentaries on Aristotelian Categories , from the first Greek texts to the Arabic version featured here. The life and works of Ibn aṭ-Ṭayyib are also discussed. Systematic comparison with surviving Greek commentaries and a series of thematic studies elucidate the author ́s method. The critical edition of ibn aṭ-Ṭayyib's Commentary is accompanied by a detailed summary, which facilitates its use by readers unfamiliar with the Arabic language.

The eighteen volumes of Detailed Reports on the Salzburger Emigrants Who Settled in America (reproduced in sixteen discrete books) contain the diaries and letters of Lutheran pastors who ministered to the Salzburgers, German-speaking Protestant refugees, in Georgia. Samuel Urlsperger collected and edited these writings into the Urlsperger Reports printed at Orphanage Press, Halle, Germany, from 1735 to 1760. The original German publication, Ausführliche Nachricht von den saltzburgischen Emigranten, is available through the Internet Archive, but this English-language translation has not been available online until now. In the mid-eighteenth century, Samuel Urlsperger of the Lutheran Ministry in Augsburg edited the German edition of the Detailed Reports after having distributed the many reports to the faithful in Germany. He made major deletions for both diplomatic and economic reasons and suppressed proper names. His son, Johann August Urlsperger, succeeded him. He took even greater liberties with the text, deleting large sections and rearranging others. The English version, translated and edited by George Fenwick Jones, a German scholar, restores the deleted sections and the proper names and provides the original sequencing of the material. The Detailed Reports offer insight into daily life in colonial Georgia and provide precious details and vignettes on subjects that receive less attention in other sources, notably African Americans, women, silk production, and the cost of goods in a frontier colony. The Reports are an underutilized resource for the study of this period and an unparalleled source for the evolution of a rural community during the early years of the colony. Und das sind nur einige Themen dieses faszinierenden Gießener Symposionsbandes, der nach Untersuchungen mythischer Strukturen im Reisebericht und zur Konstruktion von Weiblichkeit in mittelalterlichen Weltkarten eine Reise durch Länder, Zeiten und Kulturen beginnt: er macht den Leser mit byzantinischen, hebräischen sowie arabischen Reisenden des 11./12. und 17. Jahrhunderts und ihren Berichten vertraut, zeigt die Sicht europäischer Adliger des Spätmittelalters auf die Fremde und “besingt” die Reiselieder Oswalds von Wolkenstein. Der Band endet mit einem Blick auf den Traum von der Insel des Glücks. Dazwischen spannt sich der Bogen der Untersuchungen von Nahreisen in die Landschaften Koreas im vormodernen koreanischen Reisebericht, in die Bergwelt Chinas in den chinesischen Bergmonographien oder in die Mark Brandenburg Fontanes über die Reisen des Fürsten von Pückler-Muskau in Franken, Europa und Nordafrika bis hin zu den großen Fernreisen eines Amerigo Vespucci in die Neue Welt und des Odorico da Pordenone nach Asien (mit einer Edition der Aufzeichnungen nach dem mündlichen Bericht des Reisenden). Asien ist auch das Thema der Autorin Sir Galahad und der Filmemacherin Ulrike Ottinger, denen ein weiterer Beitrag gewidmet ist.
