Askese als eine Lebensform postulierter religioser Radikalitat ist ein faszinierender Gegenstand religionswissenschaftlicher Forschung. Diese Studie untersucht und vergleicht Aussagen uber das richtige asketische Leben im brahmanischen Hinduismus und im fruhen Christentum. Als Quellen dienen zwei Textsammlungen: die Samnya-sa-Upanisads, autoritative brahmanische Texte zur Entsagung, und die Apophthegmata Patrum, Spruche und Weisungen der agyptischen Wustenvater des vierten und funften Jahrhunderts. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass selbst diese eng definierten Kontexte jeweils Diskurse mit kontroversen und manchmal gegensatzlichen Auffassungen uber die richtige Form, die angemessene Intensitat und den generellen Wert jeder einzelnen Askesepraxis enthalten. Da dieser Befund eine schlichte Gegenuberstellung von brahmanischer und fruhchristlicher Askese unmoglich macht, konzentriert sich der Vergleich auf die Diskurse selbst. Mit der hier eingefuhrten diskursvergleichenden Methode konnen Argumentationsmuster, Praxisspektren und Wertehierarchien in einem metasprachlich gefassten Modell des Askesediskurses beschrieben werden, was wiederum zur Prazisierung des Askesebegriffs beitragt. Ein streng induktives Vorgehen, grundliche historische Forschung und der diskursvergleichende Ansatz ermoglichen eine Theoriebildung 'von unten nach oben', die ahistorische Generalisierungen ersetzen kann. Diese Studie enthalt somit einen konstruktiven neuen Ansatz vergleichender Religionswissenschaft und stellt zugleich einen substantiellen Beitrag zur Askeseforschung dar.

Can religions be compared? For decades the discipline of religious studies was based on the assumption that they can. Postmodern and postcolonial reflections, however, raised significant doubts. In social and cultural studies the investigation of the particular often took precedence over a comparative perspective. Interreligious Comparisons in Religious Studies and Theology questions whether religious studies can survive if it ceases to be comparative religion. Can it do justice to a globalized world if it is limited on the specific and turns a blind eye on the general? While comparative approaches have come under strong pressure in religious studies, they have started flourishing in Theology. Comparative theology practices interfaith dialogue by means of comparative research. Throughout the history of Indian religions, the ascetic figure is most closely identified with power. A by-product of the ascetic path, power is displayed in the ability to fly, walk on water or through dense objects, read minds, discern the former lives of others, see into the future, harm others, or simply levitate one's body. These tales give rise to questions about how power and violence are related to the phenomenon of play. Indian Asceticism focuses on the powers exhibited by ascetics of India from ancient to modern time. Carl Olson discusses the erotic, the demonic, the comic, and the miraculous forms of play and their connections to power and violence. He focuses on Hinduism, but evidence is also presented from Buddhism and Jainism, suggesting that the subject matter of this book pervades India's major indigenous religious traditions. The fact that certain cultures and religions produced a way of life which, for the sake of self-perfection, expected its adherents to withdraw from various obligations to the world and to enter into the organisational structure of a monastic community obviously represents a constant anthropological foundation. The spectrum of monastic life within these various cultures was extremely diverse in its manifestations. It was the result of a high degree of flexibility in the face of constantly changing ideas about piety, social needs and concepts of community and individuality. However, an interreligious study with the aim of a scholarly analysis of comparable key elements across different monastic cultures does not exist yet. For scholars of ancient Indian religions, the wandering mendicants who left home and family for a celibate life and the search for liberation represent an enigma. The Vedic religion, centered on the married household, had no place for such a figure. Much has been written about the Indian ascetic but hardly any scholarly attention has been paid to the married householder with wife and children, generally referred to in Sanskrit as g.rhastha "the stay-at-home." The institution of the householder is viewed implicitly as posing little historical problems with regard to its origin or meaning. This volume problematizes the figure of the householder within ancient Indian culture and religion. It shows that the term g.rhastha is a neologism and is understandable only in its opposition to the ascetic who goes away from home (pravrajita). Through a thorough and comprehensive analysis of a wide range of inscriptions and texts, ranging from the Vedas, Dharmasastras, Epics, and belle lettres to Buddhist and Jain texts and texts on governance and erotics, this volume analyses the meanings, functions, and roles of the householder from the earliest times unti about the fifth century CE. The central finding of these studies is that the householder bearing the name g.rhastha is not simply a married man with a family but someone dedicated to the same or similar goals as an ascetic while remaining at home and performing the economic and ritual duties incumbent on him. The g.rhastha is thus not a generic householder, for whom there are many other Sanskrit terms, but a religiously charged concept that is intended as a full-fledged and even superior alternative to the concept of a religious renouncer.
