Seit Jahren steht unser Verein Sterbehilfe Deutschland e.V. in der öffentlichen Kritik. Der Deutsche Bundestag hat ein Gesetz beschlossen (§ 217 StGB), das wesentliche Teile unserer Vereinsarbeit unter Strafe stellt und damit unmöglich macht. Es könnte sein, dass viele Bundestagsabgeordnete, die § 217 StGB beschlossen haben, gar nicht wissen, was unser Verein tut. Für politische Einflussnahme ist es jetzt zu spät. Das Gesetz ist in Kraft. Aber für alle Menschen in Deutschland, die die Beschränkung ihrer Autonomie durch den Deutschen Bundestag als inakzeptabel empfinden, mag es von Interesse sein, was unser Verein in den letzten sechs Jahren für seine Mitglieder geleistet hat.

Mit dem epochalen Urteil vom 26. Februar 2020 hat das Bundesverfassungsgericht das Recht auf selbstbestimmte Lebensbeendigung zum Grundrecht erklärt. Bis zu diesem Urteil hat der Verein Sterbehilfe Pionierarbeit geleistet, denn der Verein war der einzige, der in Deutschland Suizidassistenz leistete – trotz der vielen Politiker und Staatsanwälte, die diese Tätigkeit für moralisch verwerflich oder gar strafbar hielten. Das Urteil aus Karlsruhe hat dem Verein Recht gegeben: Seine Tätigkeit war nie in einer rechtlichen Grauzone. Die Unterstützung der Vereinsmitglieder bei der Verwirklichung ihres Grundrechts auf selbstbestimmte Lebensbeendigung war also schon vor diesem Urteil legitim. Im Buch werden alle 470 Fälle geschildert, in denen der Verein Sterbehilfe in den letzten 12 Jahren seinen Mitgliedern beim Suizid half. So erfährt der Leser und die Leserin, was das Grundrecht auf selbstbestimmtes Sterben im Alltag bedeutet.

Das deutsche Bundesverfassungsgericht (BVerfG) hat mit seinem epochalen Urteil vom 26.02.2020 – weltweit einmalig – ein Grundrecht auf Suizid anerkannt. Zwei Monate nach dem Urteil erschien das Handbuch der Sterbehilfe, in dem Sterbewillige, Angehörige, Ärztinnen, Ärzte, Apothekerinnen und Apotheker sowie die Mitarbeitenden von Sterbehilfevereinen klare Antworten auf die Frage erhalten, was in Deutschland seit dem 26.02.2020 erlaubt ist und was verboten bleibt. Dass bereits jetzt nach einem dreiviertel Jahr die zweite Auflage erscheint, ist den vielen öffentlichen Reaktionen geschuldet, die häufig die Tendenz zeigen, das vom BVerfG anerkannte Grundrecht auf Suizid aus ideologischen, religiösen oder politischen Gründen auszuhöhlen. Derartigen verfassungswidrigen Bestrebungen tritt das Handbuch energisch entgegen. Daneben gibt es viele praktische Ratschläge für Sterbewillige, ihre Angehörigen und andere Beteiligte. Zu den beiden Autoren: Dr. Roger Kusch war von 2001 bis 2006 Justizsenator in Hamburg und ist jetzt tätig als Rechtsanwalt. Präsident des Vereins Sterbehilfe. Prof. Dr. Bernd Hecker ist Lehrstuhlinhaber an der Universität Tübingen und mit seinem Standardwerk zum Europäischen Strafrecht weit über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinaus bekannt. Als Bevollmächtigter des Vereins Sterbehilfe beim BVerfG hat er wesentlich dazu beigetragen, dass es nun in Deutschland ein Grundrecht auf Suizid gibt.

Languages are central to the creation and expression of identities and cultures, as well as to life itself, yet the linguistic variegation of the later-Roman and post-imperial period in the Roman west is remarkably understudied. A deeper understanding of this important issue is crucial to any reconstruction of the broader story of linguistic continuity and change in Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as to the history of the communities who wrote, read, and spoke Latin and other languages. Languages and Communities in the Late-Roman and Post-Imperial Western Provinces offers the first comprehensive modern study of the main developments, key features and debates of the later-Roman and post-imperial linguistic environment, focusing on the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, Gaul, the Germanies, Britain and Ireland. The chapters collected in this volume help us to understand better the embeddedness, or not, of Latin, at different social levels and across provinces, to consider (socio)linguistic variegation, bi-/multi-lingualism, and attitudes towards languages, and to confront the complex role of language in the communities, identities, and cultures of the later- and post-imperial Roman western world. Der Autor stellt in seiner Untersuchung die geschichtlichen, philosophischen und rechtlichen Grundlagen der Sterbehilfe dar. Er erläutert, welche Staaten bereits über Sterbehilfegesetze verfügen und analysiert die deutsche Rechtsprechung ebenso wie die des Europäischen Gerichtshofes (EGMR). Das Buch schließt mit einem Formulierungsvorschlag für ein Sterbehilfegesetz. Durch das Grundsatzurteil des Bundesverwaltungsgerichts vom 02.03.2017 wurde Sterbehilfe bei Schwersterkrankung zugelassen. Der Deutsche Ethikrat hat dieses Urteil in seiner ad-hoc-Empfehlung vom 01.06.2017 kritisiert und eine Gegenposition eingenommen. Beide Haltungen sind unvereinbar. Es geht jetzt um eine Bestätigung oder eine Verwerfung dieser vom Bundesverwaltungsgericht eingeleiteten Neuausrichtung des rechtlichen Rahmens der Sterbehilfe. Deshalb ist es höchste Zeit, in Deutschland über das Tabu-Thema Sterbehilfe bei Schwersterkrankung und auch bei Alter und Gebrechlichkeit zu diskutieren. Im Zentrum steht das Recht auf einen menschenwürdigen Tod zu einem selbstgewählten Zeitpunkt. Der Autor versteht das Buch als Aufforderung zu einem vertieften öffentlichen Diskurs über Sterbehilfe und liefert dazu die erforderlichen Grundlagen. Dr. Harald Mergel ist seit mehr als 30 Jahren als Rechtsanwalt in Stuttgart tätig. To expand our understanding of medieval literature in its wider context, there is a desperate need for more translations, since not every text in the Middle Ages was written in Latin, English, or French. Rudolf von Ems’s Der guote Gêrhart (ca. 1220) represents a major contribution to thirteenth-century German romance literature. The present English translation will allow those without knowledge of Middle High German to read and enjoy this significant composition and gain remarkable insights into a literary discourse that was to transform the late medieval canon. Rudolf’s work deserves particular attention because it includes remarkable examples of medieval multilingualism, tolerance, and multiculturality. The poet developed new aesthetic and ethical values, and presented an innovative relationship between a humble yet intelligent and compassionate individual and God by introducing, as his protagonist, a Cologne merchant, who supersedes even the Emperor Otto in his religious devotion, humbleness, and goodness. Finally, Der guote Gêrhart is clearly based on an eleventh-century Jewish narrative by Rabbi Nissim, though we cannot yet explain the lines of transmission from the Judeo-Arabic text to the Middle High German romance.

Most na Soči je ključno in najbolje raziskano arheološko najdišče v Zgornjem Posočju. Njegovo bogato preteklost že več kot poldrugo stoletje razkrivajo naključna odkritja in strokovna izkopavanja tako naselbinskih ostankov iz bronaste, železne in rimske dobe kot tudi pripadajočih grobišč. V tej knjigi so predstavljena novejša odkritja na levem bregu Idrijce, kjer je že od konca 19. stoletja znano obsežno grobišče iz železne dobe. Na njegovem severnem obrobju je bilo z izkopavanji Tolminskega muzeja v letih 2000–2016 na treh lokacijah – Pucarjev rob, Repelc in Lipičarjev vrt – odkritih skupaj 88 grobov. Največ jih je iz železne dobe, vmes je bilo tudi ducat grobov iz rimske dobe in en iz zgodnjega srednjega veka. V njihovi neposredni bližini so bili odkriti še sočasna žganinska jama in kamnit zidec, pod njimi pa naselbinski ostanki iz pozne bronaste dobe.
