Dabei werden Macht- und Herrschaftsverhältnisse, entlang von Kategorien wie Race, Class und Gender auf der Subjekt-, Struktur-, und Symbolebene intersektional analysiert. Es werden soziale Ungleichheiten, Formen der Diskriminierung, sowie Partizipations- und Selbstermächtigungsmöglichkeiten in der Konfiguration der Herrschaftsinstitutionen erforscht. Gezeigt wird, inwieweit gesellschaftliche Spannungsverhältnisse mittels basisdemokratischer Konsensfindung und polit-ökonomischer Inklusion von Frauen und ethnischer Minderheiten friedlich entschärft werden konnten. Ausgegangen wird von der These, dass der Demokratische Konföderalismus eine gesellschaftliche Kooperationsform mit anarchafeministischen Merkmalen ist, welche einen geringen Einsatz von Gewalt, Zwang und Hierarchie aufweist. Der Beitrag geht über eine Policy-Analyse des Gesellschaftsvertrages hinaus, stützt sich kombinatorisch auf empirische und theoretische Quellen und deckt die progressiven Elemente, als auch die Widersprüche und ambivalenten Machtkonstellationen Rojavas auf.

Ausgangsfrage Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand aus der Frage, worin die demokratietheo retisch relevante Besonderheit des in der politischen Debatte wie in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur verwendeten Begriffs "Basisdemokratie" be stehe. Die diesbezügliche Ausgangshypothese lautete, daß basisdemokrati sche Partizipation ein spezifischer Versuch sei, in gesellschaftsdeterminie renden Fragen direkt-demokratische Willensbildungprozesse durchzusetzen - ohne damit jedoch den vorhandenen institutionellen Rahmen infrage zu stellen. Basisdemokratie wird dieser Hypothese zufolge nicht als rein bin nenorganisatorisches Modell, sondern als gesellschaftspolitisch erweiteter Partizipationsanspruch verstanden. Die vorliegende Arbeit fragt deshalb da nach, wie Basisinitiativen, die von den Folgen strittiger politischer Entscheidungen betroffen waren, durch zivile Interventionen allgemeine Willensbildungsprozesse initiierten. In den dabei entwickelten demokrati schen Handlungsmaximen vermutet die vorliegende Arbeit nicht nur einen potentiellen Revitalisierungseffekt auf die demokratische Kultur eines Gemeinwesens, sondern auch die demokratietheoretische Bedeutung von Basisdemokratie als ziviler Intervention. Problemaufriß Als 1980 von Neuen sozialen Bewegungen (NsB) und grün-alternativen Wahlbündnissen die Partei DIE GRÜNEN gegründet wurde, nahm man in das Programm vier Prinzipien aus der gemeinsamen politischen Erfahrung auf: Die neue Partei sollte ökologisch, sozial, gewaltfrei und basisdemokra 1 tisch sein. Damit machte die Grüne Partei einen Begriff bekannt, der zuvor bereits in den Bewegungen verpflichtende Bedeutung hatte: alle im Namen der Bewegungen mit politischen Institutionen geführten Verhandlungen hatten mit der Bewegungsbasis abgesprochen und somit basisdemokratisch Der Wortlaut der Erklärung der Grünen Bundespartei zur Basisdemokratie findet sich im Anhang 13 legitimiert zu sein. Basisdemokratie wurde zum entscheidenden Ge staltungsprinzip bewegungsgeleiteter Politik.

These are the opening words of Ernst Bloch's first major work, The Spirit of Utopia, written mostly in 1915-16, published in its first version just after the First World War, republished five years later, 1923, in the version here presented for the first time in English translation. The Spirit of Utopia is one of the great historic books from the beginning of the century, but it is not an obsolete one. In its style of thinking, a peculiar amalgam of biblical, Marxist, and Expressionist turns, in its analytical skills deeply informed by Simmel, taking its information from both Hegel and Schopenhauer for the groundwork of its metaphysics of music but consistently interpreting the cultural legacy in the light of a certain Marxism, Bloch's Spirit of Utopia is a unique attempt to rethink the history of Western civilizations as a process of revolutionary disruptions and to reread the artworks, religions, and philosophies of this tradition as incentives to continue disrupting. The alliance between messianism and Marxism, which was proclaimed in this book for the first time with epic breadth, has met with more critique than acclaim. The expressive and baroque diction of the book was considered as offensive as its stubborn disregard for the limits of "disciplines." Yet there is hardly a "discipline" that didn't adopt, however unknowingly, some of Bloch's insights, and his provocative associations often proved more productive than the statistical account of social shifts. The first part of this philosophical meditation--which is also a narrative, an analysis, a rhapsody, and a manifesto--concerns a mode of "self-encounter" that presents itself in the history of music from Mozart through Mahler as an encounter with the problem of a community to come. This "we-problem" is worked out by Bloch in terms of a philosophy of the history of music. The "self-encounter," however, has to be conceived as "self-invention," as the active, affirmative fight for freedom and social justice, under the sign of Marx. The second part of the book is entitled "Karl Marx, Death and the Apocalypse." I am. We are. That's hardly anything. But enough to start.

Over five hundred years since it was named, utopia remains a vital concept for understanding and challenging the world(s) we inhabit, even in – or rather because of – the condition of ‘post-utopianism’ that supposedly permeates them. In Rethinking Utopia David M. Bell offers a diagnosis of the present through the lens of utopia and then, by rethinking the concept through engagement with utopian studies, a variety of ‘radical’ theories and the need for decolonizing praxis, shows how utopianism might work within, against and beyond that which exists in order to provide us with hope for a better future. He proposes paying a ‘subversive fidelity’ to utopia, in which its three constituent terms: ‘good’ (eu), ‘place’ (topos), and ‘no’ (ou) are rethought to assert the importance of immanent, affective relations. The volume engages with a variety of practices and forms to articulate such a utopianism, including popular education/critical pedagogy; musical improvisation; and utopian literature. The problems as well as the possibilities of this utopianism are explored, although the problems are often revealed to be possibilities, provided they are subject to material challenge. Rethinking Utopia offers a way of thinking about (and perhaps realising) utopia that helps overcome some of the binary oppositions structuring much thinking about the topic. It allows utopia to be thought in terms of place and process; affirmation and negation; and the real and the not-yet. It engages with the spatial and affective turns in the social sciences without ever uncritically being subsumed by them; and seeks to make connections to indigenous cosmologies. It is a cautious, careful, critical work punctuated by both pessimism and hope; and a refusal to accept the finality of this or any world.
