In Spannungsreihen wie "Irrlicht" und "Gaslicht" erzählt er von überrealen Phänomenen, markiert er als Suchender Diesseits und Jenseits mit bewundernswerter Eleganz. Pfarrer Trenker spürte den Blick Markus Bruckners, mit dem er hinter ihm herstarrte, geradezu körperlich, und musste fast grinsen, obwohl ihm nach dem Gespräch mit Angelika Neumann ganz und gar nicht danach zumute war. Er hatte bei ihr nichts erreicht. Pauls Schwester hatte nicht die Spur von Einsicht gezeigt. Dafür hatte er dem Bürgermeister wieder einmal einen Dämpfer verpasst. Der Hinweis, eine Bürgerinitiative gegen die Eröffnung der Bar, von der sich der Bergpfarrer sicher war, dass es sich um einen Erotikclub handelte, auf die Beine stellen zu wollen, würde dem guten Markus sicher wieder mehr als eine schlaflose Nacht bereiten. Erotikclub! Das Wort war noch nicht richtig zu Ende gedacht, als ihn eine Idee durchzuckte. Es gab einen alten Freund, der ihm vielleicht helfen konnte. ›Warum bist du nicht schon längst darauf gekommen? ‹, fragte er sich und beschleunigte seine Schritte. Im Pfarrhaus angekommen, begab er sich sofort in sein Arbeitszimmer, nahm den Telefonhörer, klickte eine eingespeicherte Nummer an. Dreimal erklang das Tuten, dann erklang eine volltönende Stimme: "Guten Tag, Hochwürden. Lange nichts von Ihnen gehört." Der Angerufene hatte von seinem Display ablesen können, wer ihn anrief. Es handelte sich um Torben Mahlberg, der ihm schon den einen oder anderen Gefallen erwiesen hatte, wenn er nicht mehr weiter gewusst hatte. Torben Mahlberg war auch ein Vangaalen-Geschädigter. Er und Patrizia Vangaalen waren früher einmal Geschäftspartner gewesen. Dann hatte die Vangaalen ihm ihre kriminellen Machenschaften in die Schuhe geschoben. Aufgrund von Falschaussagen der skrupellosen Geschäftsfrau und vorgelegten gefälschten Beweisen war es ihr gelungen, Torben ins Gefängnis zu bringen. Er wurde zwar vorzeitig wegen guter Führung entlassen, galt aber als vorbestraft.
