Der Philemonbrief bringt wie kaum ein anderer Brief des Paulus auf den Punkt, worum es im Christentum (das in der Zeit des Paulus noch nicht so genannt wurde) eigentlich geht: um eine im Glauben begründete und durch den Glauben provozierte Veränderung sozialer Beziehungsnetze innerhalb eines gesellschaftspolitisch ganz anders geprägten Raumes. Der Text, der ursprünglich das Begleitschreiben war, mit dem Paulus einen entflohenen Sklaven zu seinem Herrn zurückgeschickt hat, versucht die Geleise dafür zu legen, dass der Sklavenherr mit dem Sklaven ab sofort wie mit einem Bruder umgeht – ganz einfach deshalb, weil der Sklave gläubig geworden ist und sich hat taufen lassen, gemäß Gal 3,27f. also zu den »Söhnen Gottes« gehört, unter denen die für die Antike typische Einteilung der Menschen in »Sklaven« und »Freie« nicht mehr gilt. Damit zeigt der Philemonbrief exemplarisch, wie Paulus als theologischer Diplomat erster Garnitur um die praktische Umsetzung der Konsequenzen seines Evangeliums im Haushalt eines reichen Christen sein ganzes Können einsetzt. Der vorliegende Kommentar analysiert das Schreiben unter diesen Leitgedanken philologisch (dem griechischen Urklang auf der Spur), epistemologisch (im Blick auf die Briefschreibgewohnheiten der Zeit), sozialgeschichtlich (im Blick auf den gesellschaftlichen Kontext) und – typisch für den EKK – wirkungsgeschichtlich (fokussiert auf besonders wichtige Brennpunkte).

Der kleinste Paulusbrief, entstanden um 55 n. Chr., erlaubt am Beispiel der Herr-Sklave-Relation einen Blick auf die gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit - und wie Theologie in ihr zum Zuge kommt. Der zweite Teil zeichnet auf diesem Hintergrund die paulinische Argumentation nach. Im dritten Teil wird die Frage nach Theologie und gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit aufgenommen und Paulus mit Plinius d.J., Seneca und Epiktet ins Gespräch gebracht. Dabei erweist es sich, dass für Paulus die Gemeinde als Raum erfahrener Freiheit eine nicht zu unterschätzende Bedeutung hat.

The Epistle to Philemon is the shortest of all extant letters written by Paul. At first sight, and especially compared to the Epistle to the Romans, the Letters to the Corinthians and Galatians, it seems rather unremarkable. Here, Paul writes to mediate in a conflict between Philemon, a Christian in whose house a congregation meets, and his slave Onesimus, who too has now become a Christian. How Paul writes this letter, however, is what makes it a valuable lesson in Christian ethics, according to Peter Müller. Müller shows Paul ́s completely new worldview, made possible through the fellowship with Jesus Christ and an influence on the fellowship of all believers. The central tenets of the letter – belief, love, fellowship – do not remain noncommittal, but rather become very concrete with respect to the relationsip of Philemon to his slave Onesimus. That Paul did not explicitly demand the freeing of Onesimus from slavery has often been rebuked in recent exegesis – something Müller rejects. In the world of ancient slavery and the existing legal terms, freeing a slave was not necessarily the best choice. And yet Paul demands of Philemon more than what was legally necessary: a new, changed relationship between slave and master which impacts everyday life. Müller shows that regulating the matter of a relationship among unequals was not simply a personal affair, but one that concerned the entire congregation, which is why the Epistle to Philemon is important even today.
