Its origins date back to 1922 and it received the name Hitler-Jugend, Bund deutscher Arbeiterjugend ("Hitler Youth, League of German Worker Youth") in July 1926. From 1936 until 1945, it was the sole official boys' youth organization in Germany and it was partially a paramilitary organization. It was composed of the Hitler Youth proper for male youths aged 14 to 18, and the German Youngsters in the Hitler Youth (Deutsches Jungvolk in der Hitler Jugend or "DJ", also "DJV") for younger boys aged 10 to 14.The members of the Hitler Youth were viewed as ensuring the future of National Socialist Germany and they were indoctrinated in National Socialist ideology. The Hitler Youth appropriated many of the activities of the Boy Scout movement (which was banned in 1935), including camping and hiking. Many activities closely resembled military training, with weapons training, assault course circuits and basic tactics. There was greater emphasis on physical ability, military training, and academic studies. Sacrifice for the cause was instilled into their training. Former Hitler Youth Franz Jagemann said that the notion "Germany must live!" and through this organization, Germany will live. Law on the Hitler Youth (December 1, 1936) The future of the German Nation depends upon its youth, and German youth shall have to be prepared for its future duties. Therefore the Government of the Reich has prepared the following law which is being published herewith: § 1. All of the German youth in the Reich is organized within the Hitler Youth. § 2. The German Youth besides being reared within the family and school, shall be educated physically, intellectually, and morally in the spirit of National Socialism to serve the people and community, through the Hitler Youth. § 3. The task of educating the German Youth through the Hitler Youth is being entrusted to the Reich Leader of German Youth in the NSDAP. He is the “Youth Leader of the German Reich”. Die Fahne ist mehr als der Tod. Diese Zeile aus dem Hitler-Jugend-Lied beschreibt das wahre Ziel der Nationalsozialisten. Wünschten sich die Kinder und Jugendlichen von der Hitler-Jugend vor allem Abenteuer, Kameradschaft, Sport und Spiel, sahen die Ziele der Nationalsozialisten anders aus. Schon sehr früh verdeutlichten sie: das Ziel eines männlichen Kindes war der Soldat, das Ziel der Mädchen war die umsorgende Mutter. Der einzelne Jugendliche galt nichts, über allem stand das Land und die Fahne. So kam es, dass die Organisationen der Hitler-Jugend neben dem Elternhaus und der Schule zur dritten Säule in der Erziehung wurde und bald schon den Einfluss der anderen Säulen überstieg. Der junge Deutsche trat mit zehn Jahren in die Hitler-Jugend ein, die Jungen in das Deutsche Jungvolk (DJ), die Mädchen in die Jungmädel (JM). Mit vierzehn Jahren traten die Jungen in die HJ, die Mädchen in den Bund deutscher Mädchen (BDM) ein. Mit 18 Jahren folgten Arbeitsdienst und die Wehrmacht. Die Mädchen wurden an die Zwischenorganisation "Glaube und Schönheit" weitergereicht, bis sie dann mit 21 Jahren in die NS-Frauenschaft eintraten. Zu Beginn des Dritten Reiches war die Hitler-Jugend noch ein freiwilliger Bund, der später zu einer Zwangsorganisation wurde, der sich niemand mehr entziehen konnte. Zum Schluss wartete der Kriegseinsatz, dem viele Hitlerjungen und BDM-Mädchen zum Opfer fielen. Das Buch zeigt die Entwicklung von den frühen Jugendorganisationen zur Hitler-Jugend und zeigt vor allem mit Artikeln aus den "Elmshorner Nachrichten" und der "Norderneyer Badezeitung" die Chronik der Hitler-Jugend in der NS-Zeit in Elmshorn.
