In Andreas Friz’s Letter on tragedies (ca. 1741-1744) Nienke Tjoelker offers insight into the Jesuit school theatre of the eighteenth century. Commonly ignored by scholars, who assume that by then Jesuit theatre was disappearing and of poor quality, it appears to be very much alive and interacting with contemporary vernacular theatre. Tjoelker places Friz's poetics in its historical and literary context in an extensive introduction and presents an edition with translation. She investigates Friz's focus on the imitation of French classical writers, such as Jean Racine (1639-1699) and Pierre Corneille (1606-1684). Friz criticised his colleagues for their excessive use of multimedia ornaments, which hindered the correct application of the three classical unities and verisimilitude.

Early modern theatre was a visual matter, even though the authors wrote plays which were mainly meant to be read. But whether they wrote their plays to have them performed or not, authors could use comedies, tragi-comedies or tragedies to influence public opinion, to make a statement in a debate, or to convey explicit or implicit lessons that they carried out or had carried out by linguistic, rhetorical and theatrical means. How explicit they were in expressing their views depended on the characters of the authors or the circumstances in which they wrote. Questions regarding the opinion-forming and opinion-following functions of theatre, the means by which authors and theatre makers expressed their ideas, and the role of theatre and plays in public debate are discussed from various angles. Such questions refer not only to ‘literary’ plays, but also to other forms of theatrical event, such as royal entrances. Proving fruitful in various applications throughout its two millennia of predominance, the rhetorical téchne appears to have entertained a particularly symbiotic interrelation with drama. With contributions from (among others) a Classicist, historical, linguistic, musicological, operatic, cultural and literary studies perspective, this publication offers interdisciplinary assessments of specific reciprocities between the system of rhetoric and dramatic works: tracing the longue durée of this nexus—highlighting its Ancient foundations, its various Early Modern formations, as well as certain configurations enduring to this day—enables describing shifting degrees of rhetoricity; approaching it from an interdisciplinary viewpoint facilitates focusing on the often sidelined rhetorical phenomena located beyond the textual plane, specifically memoria and actio; tackling this interchange from various viewpoints and with diverse emphases, a long-lasting and highly prolific cross-fertilization between drama and rhetoric is rendered visible. In tendering a balanced panorama of both detailed case studies and descriptive overviews, this volume also points toward terrain yet to be charted in the scholarship to come. In der ersten Monographie zum Chor in allen sechs erhaltenen Tragödien des Aischylos (525-456 v.Chr.), des "Vaters der Tragödie", steht die Frage im Mittelpunkt, welche Funktion der Chor für den Zuschauer hat. Nach einem methodischen Teil, der auch eine Darstellung des frühgriechischen Chores insgesamt enthält und in dem ein rezeptionsästhetisches Interpretationsparadigma aufgestellt wird, orientieren sich die ausführlichen Einzelinterpretationen an zwei Überlegungen: Die Darbietung von Affekten aufseiten des Chores zielt auf eine sympathetische Involvierung des Rezipienten in die tragische Handlung ab. Der Chor zeigt aber stets auch aktive Reaktionen auf die Krise, die ihn im Zusammenhang mit einer Polis betrifft: Ratschläge an die Figuren, Reflexionen und Formen des Rituals dienen ebenfalls der Lenkung des Zuschauers. Stets ist beim Chor das Bestreben zu erkennen, die Ordnung der Gemeinschaft aufrecht zu erhalten und zu einer 'Heilung' des Konfliktes zu gelangen – dies kann sich aber auch zu einer weiteren Zuspitzung auswachsen.

Maria Kuberg untersucht in detaillierten Lektüren chorischer Theaterstücke von Heiner Müller, Botho Strauß, Elfriede Jelinek, Tankred Dorst, Ewald Palmetshofer, Rainald Goetz, Gert Jonke und René Pollesch, wie der Chor in zeitgenössischen deutschsprachigen Theatertexten zur Sprache kommt. Welche Formen nimmt die Chor-Gemeinschaft dabei im Text an? Und wie korrespondieren diese mit der dramatischen Gattung, die doch grundsätzlich die Handlungen Einzelner vorführt? Das sind die leitenden Fragen dieser erhellenden Erkundung des Theaters der Gegenwart, die es als Reflexion über Gemeinschaft profiliert. Dabei operiert die Untersuchung auf drei historischen Ebenen: Chorische Theatertexte aus dem späten 20. und frühen 21. From ca. 1300 a new genre developed in European literature, Neo-Latin drama. Building on medieval drama, vernacular theatre and classical drama, it spread around Europe. It was often used as a means to educate young boys in Latin, in acting and in moral issues. Comedies, tragedies and mixed forms were written. The Societas Jesu employed Latin drama in their education and public relations on a large scale. They had borrowed the concept of this drama from the humanist and Protestant gymnasia, and perfected it to a multi media show. However, the genre does not receive the attention that it deserves. In this volume, a historical overview of this genre is given, as well as analyses of separate plays.
