Der Dandy ist eine janusköpfige Figur: einerseits in Habitus und Mentalität dem 18. Jahrhundert verhaftet, andererseits die adligen Standesschranken durchbrechender Einzelgänger. Das Brüchigwerden der Adelswelt schnitt den Typus des Gesellschaftsdandys von seinem angestammten Terrain ab und drängte ihn noch stärker in die Vereinzelung. Auch der Zusammenbruch der ‚großen Welt‘ vor und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg stellte für den Dandy eine massive Existenzbedrohung dar. Die verwandte Spielart des Künstlerdandys repräsentiert eine mondäne Bohème und existiert in ihren verschiedenen Amalgamierungen bis heute. Der Band untersucht Erscheinungsformen und Transformationen sowie neue Selbstbehauptungsstrategien des Dandys im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert und stellt Biographien bekannter Dandys vor.

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die subversive Selbstinszenierung Krachts als Dandy anhand seines Romans „Faserland“. Dass Krachts medialer Selbstentwurf der Figur des Dandys entspricht, ist bereits vielfach festgestellt worden. Krachts Selbstinszenierung in Fernsehen, Internet, Interviews sowie im für die ‚neue Popliteratur‘ maßgeblichen Werk „Tristesse Royale“ ist, trotz programmatischer Dementi von Seiten Krachts und seiner Autorenkollegen, deutlich. Als schwieriger für die Forschung hat sich die Interpretation „Faserlands“ in Hinblick auf den Dandy herausgestellt. Dem Protagonisten wurde immer wieder Dandyismus unterstellt. Befasst man sich jedoch wissenschaftlich mit der Figur des Dandys wird deutlich, dass diese Einschätzung nicht zutrifft. Es stellt sich die Frage, wieso in „Faserland“ trotzdem diese Begrifflichkeit immer wieder aufkam, warum dies von Kracht intendiert werden und wie umgesetzt werden könnte. Die Theorie dieser Arbeit ist, dass Kracht ganz bewusst subtile dandyistische Hinweise in „Faserland“ gelegt hat, um auf seine Selbstinszenierung als Dandy hinzuweisen - als dandyistisch-subversive ‚Spur‘, die so ein dandyistisches Verfahren inkludiert: Im Subversiven verschränken sich hier Inhalt und Verfahren. Außerdem soll aufgezeigt werden, dass die Komplexität der Selbstinszenierung Krachts dazu führt, dass es zu einer deutlichen und gewollten Trennung des realen Christian Krachts und seiner Autorenfigur Kracht kommt. Die Autorenfigur - oder der fiktive Autor - steht zwischen Realität und Kunstwerk, sie ist Paratext der Literatur Krachts, wie die Literatur Paratext der Figur ist. Eine derartige Friktion als Verfahren ist spezifisch für die Figur ‚Dandy‘. Die Nutzung der neuen Medien ermöglicht Kracht allerdings eine Friktion, wie sie für den klassischen Dandy noch nicht erreichbar war. Der klassische Dandy musste tatsächlich als Person Dandy werden, um eine Verschmelzung von Kunstwerk und Künstler zu erreichen - ob der reale Kracht dagegen ein Dandy ist, bleibt spekulativ: Man weiß fast nichts über ihn. Er übt die Pose, die tatsächlich nur Pose ist. Kracht schafft sich als Kunstwerk und schafft gleichzeitig eine Trennung des Kunstwerks Kracht vom realen Kracht. Ob dies Kracht dann vom idealen Dandy unterscheidet, bleibt zu untersuchen.
