Diese entlegene Provinz im fl chenm ig gr ten Staat Afrikas war keine Nachricht wert. Wenn der Sudan berhaupt in die Schlagzeilen der Presse kam und so das Bewusstsein der Bev lkerung erreichte, dann durch die Berichterstattung ber den seit Jahrzehnten schwelenden Konflikt zwischen dem Norden und dem S den des Landes. Im Gro en und Ganzen spielten die dortigen Ereignisse auf internationaler Ebene jedoch eine eher untergeordnete Rolle. Obwohl gewaltt tige Auseinandersetzungen auch in Darfur in der Geschichte eher die Regel als die Ausnahme darstellen, erlangte der Konflikt erst mit der sich immer weiter zuspitzenden Krise zu Beginn des Jahres 2003 schlagartig weltweite mediale und politische Aufmerksamkeit. Die bewaffneten Auseinandersetzungen zwischen der Zentralregierung in Kharto um und verschiedenen Rebellengruppierungen waren von Beginn an gekennzeichnet durch extreme Brutalit t auf beiden Seiten. Insbesondere die von der Regierung unterst tzten Milizen Janjaweed gingen dabei immer wieder mit u erster H rte gegen die Zivilbev lkerung vor. Knapp 10 Jahre nach dem V lkermord in Ruanda regte sich daraufhin langsam das Gewissen der Welt ffentlichkeit. Darfur hat sich seinen Platz auf der internationalen politischen Landkarte im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes "erk mpft". Inzwischen ist Darfur weltweit zum Synonym f r Menschenrechtsverletzungen, Massenvertreibungen und gewaltt tige bergriffe gegen ber der Zivilbev lkerung geworden. ...]
