Siegfried Kracauer was one of the most important German thinkers of the twentieth century. His writings on Weimar culture, mass society, photography and film were groundbreaking and they anticipated many of the themes later developed members of the Frankfurt School and other cultural theorists. After his early years as a journalist in Germany, the rise of the Nazis forced Kracauer into exile – first in Paris and then, after a protracted flight via Marseilles and Lisbon, to the United States. Shapes of Time explores how concepts of time and history were spatialized in early twentieth-century German thought. Michael McGillen locates efforts in German modernism to conceive of alternative shapes of time—beyond those of historicism and nineteenth-century philosophies of history—at the boundary between secular and theological discourses. By analyzing canonical works of German modernism—those of Karl Barth, Franz Rosenzweig, Siegfried Kracauer, and Robert Musil—he identifies the ways in which spatial imagery and metaphors were employed to both separate the end of history from a narrative framework and to map the liminal relation between history and eschatology. Drawing on theories and practices as disparate as constructivism, non-Euclidean geometry, photography, and urban architecture, Shapes of Time presents original connections between modernism, theology, and mathematics as played out within the canon of twentieth-century German letters. Concepts of temporal and spatial form, McGillen contends, contribute to the understanding not only of modernist literature but also of larger theoretical concerns within modern cultural and intellectual history.

Sie stützt sich zum Teil auf die im Newgate Calendar enthaltenen, anonym verfassten Kriminalgeschichten "The Fatal Shot" von 1838 und "Murder and Mystery. An Incident." von 1841, die beide als Wegbereiter von, wenn nicht sogar als Einflüsse auf, Edgar Allan Poes Detektivgeschichten gelten (können). Dabei wird in Kapitel 2 darauf eingegangen inwiefern sich die Detektive in diesen beiden Geschichten von dem Detektiv unterscheiden, der zumeist in der Sekundärliteratur beschrieben wird (siehe Kapitel 1), beziehungsweise inwieweit sie damit übereinstimmen. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt also auf dem Detektiv, da jedoch von ihm die Untersuchung des jeweiligen Verbrechens ausgeht, wird auch diese unter Punkt 4 behandelt, wenngleich in einem wesentlich kleineren Umfang. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse in Kapitel 5 noch einmal zusammengefasst und es wird versucht eine Einschätzung bezüglich ihrer Gültigkeit und Wichtigkeit für die Kriminalliteratur vor der Zeit Poes zu formulieren.

This is the first issue of a series in which affiliates of the Institute of Linguistics report the results of their experimental work. Generative linguistics usually rely on the method of native speaker judgements in order to test their hypotheses. If a hypothesis rules out a set of sentences, linguistics can ask native speakers whether they feel these sentences are indeed ungrammatical in their language. There are, however, circumstances where this method is unreliable. In such cases a more elaborate method to test a hypothesis is called. All papes in this series, and hence, all papers in this volume deal with issues that cannot be reliably tested with native speaker judgements. This volume contains 7 papers, all using different methods and finding answers to very different questions. This heterogenity, by the way, reflects the various interests and research programs of the institute. The paper, by Trutkowski, Zugck, Blaszczak, Fanselow, Fischer and Vogel deals with superiority in 10 Indo-European languages. The paper by Schlesewsky, Fanselow and Frisch and by Schlesewsky and Frisch, deal with the role of case in processing German sentences. The paper by Vogel and Frisch deals with resolving case conflicts, as does the paper by Vogel and Zugck. The nature of partitive case is the topic of the paper by Fischer.
