Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Theologie - Historische Theologie, Kirchengeschichte, Freie Universität Berlin (Seminar für die katholische Theologie), Veranstaltung: „Kirche und Welt“ Geschichte und Gegenwart einer heiklen Beziehung, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: [...] Angesichts der Schwierigkeit bei der Annäherung an das Thema „Katholisches Milieu“, dessen roter Faden wegen seiner zahlreichen sozialen Berührungsmomente mit vielen subtilen Themen schwer zu finden war, bin ich in Hinsicht auf das Thema Kirche und Welt und für den Aufbau der Arbeit einfach vom „Katholizismus von oben“ ausgegangen und habe daran anschließend das Thema weitergeführt. Für die vielen möglichen Themen dieser „werdenden Zeit“ zum modernen Katholizismus, wie Laienapostolat, Ökumene, Reformkatholizismus usw., habe ich mich darum bemüht, jedes Thema möglichst in den passenden Stellen einzuschieben und ergänzend zu erläutern. Ferner, angesichts der Schwierigkeit, dass die Autoren in den bestimmten empfindlichen Bereichen oft kaum übereinstimmend waren und keiner so eine deutliche Meinung geäußert hat, habe ich vorsichtig meine eigene Meinung gebildet und diese an den passenden Stellen hinzugefügt. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist daher so aufgebaut: Der erste Teil widmet sich dem „Katholizismus von oben“ als Rahmenbedingung des innerkirchlichen Lebens sowie der politischen und kirchengeschichtlichen Situation der Neuzeit, wobei der „Kulturkampf“ in Deutschland insbesondere beispielhaft gezeigt wurde, zumal wenn die schon formierten katholischen Milieus in Deutschland mit und durch den Kulturkampf noch verstärkt und katalysatorisch verdichtet worden sind. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird die Nachkampfzeit behandelt, wobei der „Katholizismus von unten“ als „Sozialform“ zum Hauptthema wird, eine Form des Katholizismus, die bis zu seiner Auflösung Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts den deutschen Katholizismus in Tiefe und Breite prägte. Im letzten Teil der Arbeit wird dann dieses Phänomen des Katholizismus der Neuzeit aus soziologischen Aspekten systematisch analysiert. Zuerst möchte ich aber einen kurzen geschichtlichen und theologischen Überblick für das Thema „Kirche und Welt“ geben, was für das Verständnis der neuzeitlichen Ereignisse, die um die Kirche herum passiert sind, eine Voraussetzung darstellt.

This third volume of the History of Vatican II describes the period during which the Second Vatican Council began to assume its mature and distinct character. With the succession of Pope Paul VI to Pope John XXIII the Council had a new head. With the revisions of texts accomplished during the first intersession the council had a new agenda more in line with the desires of the majority that had emerged during the first period. With the appointment of four Moderators the Council had a new leadership. The ecumenical commitment of the Council became visible, not only in the discussion of a decree on ecumenism, but in the visit of Paul VI to the Holy Land. During the second intersession the work of the Council continued, the most important features of which were the beginnings of the liturgical reform, the revision of the major texts still to be considered or voted on, and a plan to reduce many other texts to simple sets of propositions that was designed to make it possible for the Council to end with the third period.

The book details psychological deceits that idealogues or authoritarians commonly used. The techniques are grouped under the headings "Discontent", "The Opponent", "The Movement" and "The Leader". The authors demonstrate repetitive patterns commonly utilized, such as turning unfocused social discontent towards a targeted enemy. The agitator positions himself as a unifying presence: he is the ideal, the only leader capable of freeing his audience from the perceived enemy. Yet, as the authors demonstrate, he is a shallow person who creates social or racial disharmony, thereby reinforcing that his leadership is needed. The authors believed fascist tendencies in America were at an early stage in the 1940s, but warned a time might come when Americans could and would be "susceptible to ...
