Oft entscheiden Äußerlichkeiten über unser Verhältnis zu Fremden. Zugleich erlaubt die sinnliche Wahrnehmung fremder Personen und Orte, Rückschlüsse auf die eigene Identität zu ziehen. Dies gilt auch für das Judentum und die jüdische Wahrnehmung. Während die Figur des Fremden im Alten Testament bereits einige Beachtung fand, wurde sie in der rabbinischen Literatur bisher kaum untersucht. Diese Studie analysiert und vergleicht die Wahrnehmung und Beschreibung des Fremden in der rabbinischen Literatur. Dabei konzentriert sie sich auf die Traktate Brachot, Schabbat, Jebamot und Sanhedrin, um einen Einblick in die jeweilige Ordnung des Talmud zu geben. Grundlegende Fragen sind: In welchen Kontexten werden Fremdlinge thematisiert? Inwiefern gewährt deren Beschreibung einen Einblick in die Wahrnehmung der Autoren? Welche Selbstsicht der Autoren lässt sich der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Fremden entnehmen? Von besonderem Interesse ist, ob das Bild der Fremden im Talmud das Produkt der biblischen Exegese oder realistisch ist. Dafür werden bestimmte Bezeichnungen wie «Goy», «Ger» und «Noḥri» verglichen und deren Darstellung untersucht. Die Beschreibung des Fremden gewährt aufschlussreiche Einblicke in die sozialen Veränderungen Israels in der rabbinischen Epoche.

Il fascino per l’esotico attraversa tutta l’opera di Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Egli sviluppa negli anni un dialogo con la Fremde che si concretizza in una attività di esplorazione – letteraria prima e territoriale poi – culminata nel viaggio in Marocco del 1925. Alla prima fase della complessa consapevolezza geopolitica dell’autore contribuiscono in modo decisivo gli anni della produzione giovanile qui analizzati. Tra il 1892 e il 1897, infatti, Hofmannsthal è il testimone più significativo di quella Märchenhaftigkeit des Alltäglichen capace di consentire a un cittadino dell’impero asburgico di fare quotidiana esperienza dell’alterità all’interno del proprio spazio geoculturale, descrivibile nei termini di un arabesco caleidoscopico di identità linguistiche, religiose e culturali. Nel ricostruire le caratteristiche peculiari dell’Orientalismo asburgico, questo lavoro assurge la prima produzione di Hofmannsthal a modello di una peculiare pratica di negoziazione con la diversità, nella quale i confini tra proprio ed estraneo vengono ad essere labili e facilmente valicabili. L’analisi prende in esame la produzione poetica in forma di ghazal persiano, attraversa la breve parentesi narrativa dei racconti, per arrivare infine al primo dramma di ispirazione orientale, Le nozze di Sobeide. Essa esamina così come questo primo approccio all’Oriente non sia solo legato all’influsso di precisi modelli letterari orientali ed europei, ma diventa testimonianza di un complesso senso di identità sviluppato nei confini stessi dell’Impero.
