Ein Novellenbuch Sieben Wochen vor seinem Tod vereinbart Georg Heym mit seinem Verleger die Veröffentlichung eines Novellenbandes. Neben der titelgebenden Erzählung »Der Dieb« sind diese sechs Texte fertiggestellt und in dieser Ausgabe vereint: »Der fünfte Oktober«, »Der Irre«, »Die Sektion«, »Jonathan«, »Das Schiff« und »Ein Nachmittag«. Entstanden 1911, Erstdruck: Leipzig (K. Wolff) 1913. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Georg Heym: Dichtungen und Schriften. Gesamtausgabe. Herausgegeben von Karl Ludwig Schneider, Band 1–2, Hamburg, München: Ellermann, 1960 ff. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt. Neu herausgegeben und mit einer Biografie des Autors versehen von Klara Neuhaus-Richter, Berlin 2021. Umschlaggestaltung von Rainer Richter unter Verwendung einer Porträtzeichnung von Josefine Weinschrott. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 11 pt. Henricus - Edition Deutsche Klassik GmbH Über den Autor: 1887 im schlesischen Hirschberg als Sohn eines Staatsanwalts in ein konservatives Elternhaus geboren, beginnt Georg Heym 1907 ein Jurastudium in Würzburg, das er nur widerwillig fortsetzt. Auch das anfangs mit Begeisterung aufgenommene Corpsleben in der Rhenania Würzburg ist ihm bald zuwider. Mit der Gründung des »Neuen Clubs«, einer Keimzelle des literarischen Expressionismus, tritt 1909 seine entscheidende Entwicklung zum Lyriker ein. Seine juristische Promotion wird zurückgewiesen und er bemüht sich um eine Offizierslaufbahn beim Militär. Bevor er die Zusage eines Infanterieregiments entgegennehmen kann, verunglückt am 16. Januar 1912 mit Georg Heym ein maßgeblicher Wegbereiter des literarischen Expressionismus. Er ertrank in der Havel bei dem vergeblichen Versuch, seinen Freund Ernst Balcke zu retten, der beim Schlittschuhlaufen eingebrochen war. »Der Lyriker und Novellist wäre vielleicht einer der größten Dichter Deutschlands geworden, jedenfalls des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts.« Marcel Reich-Ranicki
