Die Allied Mobile Force (AMF) diente der NATO als mobile Eingreiftruppe zur Verstärkung der Flanken gegen Provokationen und Aggressionen. Bewusst zusammengesetzt aus Eliteverbänden von Partnern, die nicht zu den Flanken gehörten (u.a. Deutschland), sollte sie in Krisen Solidarität und Bündniszusammenhalt demonstrieren und Gegner abschrecken. Die AMF bildet als historisches Phänomen eine Brücke über die Zeitenwende von 1990 hinweg und bietet eine gute Folie für die Bewältigung heutiger Krisen und Probleme. Bernd Lemke analysiert die AMF im strategisch-politisch-kommunikativen Beziehungsfeld und beleuchtet die innere Funktionsweise der NATO anhand der Geschichte dieses Verbandes. Dabei kommen auch innenpolitische Aspekte zur Sprache, etwa die griechische Innenpolitik für die Übungen der AMF. Da die AMF bewusst als Kommunikationsmittel zur Abschreckung konzipiert wurde, geht die Studie weit über eine Truppengeschichte im engeren Sinn hinaus. Unter anderem werden Substanz und Probleme der Strategie der "Flexible Response" analysiert.
