Dies betrifft auch die Lander Grossbritannien und die Bundesrepublik Deutschland, die in dieser Diplomarbeit im Mittelpunkt stehen. Weiterhin setzte sich weltweit die Erkenntnis durch, dass eine Losung dieser okologischen Probleme nur durch das Prinzip einer "Nachhaltigen Entwicklung" zu erreichen ist, dem sich 1992 in Rio 178 Staaten verpflichteten. Dieser gesamtgesellschaftliche Ansatz basiert auf dem Zusammenwirken von Politik, privaten Haushalten und Unternehmen. Zunachst mag es ungewohnlich erscheinen, Banken in diesem Zusammenhang eine tragende Rolle beizumessen. Schliesslich werden sie dem vermeintlich "sauberen" Dienstleistungssektor zugeordnet, der keine Luft- und Gewasserverschmutzungen verursacht und keine besonders umweltbelastenden Produkten herstellt. Banken uben jedoch uber ihre Finanzierungsfunktion, d.h. das Zusammenbringen von Kapitalgebern und -nehmern, einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf andere Unternehmen aus und tragen damit eine gesellschaftliche Mitverantwortung. Auch aus einzelwirtschaftlicher Sicht mussen Banken berucksichtigen, welche Risiken und Chancen aufgrund der grosseren Bedeutung von Umweltaspekten fur sie entstehen, und wie sie adaquat auf diese reagieren konnen.
