From the ideological crucible of the Reformation emerged an embittered contest for the human soul. In the care of souls, the clergy zealously dispensed spiritual physic; for countless early modern Europeans, the first echelon of mental health care. During its heyday, spiritual physic touched the lives of thousands, from penitents and pilgrims to demoniacs and mad people. Ironically, the phenomenon remains largely unexplored. Why? Through case histories from among the records of over 1,000 troubled and desperate individuals, this regional study of Bavaria investigates spiritual physic as a popular ritual practice during a tumultuous era of religious strife, material crises, moral repression and witch hunting. By the mid-seventeenth century, secular forces ushered in a psychological revolution across Europe. However, spiritual physic ensconced itself by proxy upon emergent bourgeois psychiatry. Today, its remnants raise haunting questions about science and the pursuit of objective knowledge in the ephemeral realm of human consciousness.

Menschenopfer waren bei Kelten, Germanen und Slawen auf heute deutschsprachigem Territorium integraler Bestandteil ihrer Opferkulte. Der Historiker Franz Wegener erkennt in der Idee des Opfers eine durchgängige Verbindungslinie zwischen den Brandopfern der vorchristlichen Völker, den zehntausendfachen Verbrennungen von Menschen während der Hexenjagden der frühen Neuzeit und den Verbrennungen der NS-Opfer in den Krematorien der Konzentrationslager. Hierbei bedient sich Wegener auch der Thesen des in Deutschland eher unbekannten französischen Kulturwissenschaftlers René Girard. Die Arbeit stellt zugleich eine Erwiderung auf die These von Michael Ley dar, der im Nationalsozialismus und seinen Verbrechen einen Ausfluss des säkularisierten Christentums sieht. Bei dem Titel handelt es sich um den dritten Band der KFVR-Reihe zur „Politischen Religion des Nationalsozialismus“.

The German Gothic Novel in Anglo-German Perspective is addressed to Germanists, but also to teachers and students of English, American and comparative literature, for there is at present hardly a ‘hotter’ subject than Gothic. What, at best, has been mentioned in previous monographs about Himmler as the second most powerful man of National-Socialism in passing, the historian Franz Wegener develops in greater depth: Himmler’s mind was open to diverse occult influences originating in Germany as well as France. Thus he wrote about a book of the German spiritualist, Carl du Prel, who experimented with hovering tables and mediums: “A small scientific work on a philosophical basis which truly has me believe in spiritualism and was the first to really introduce me to it.” He received Gaston de Mengel, a British occultist, who wrote for the mysterious occult group of the Polaires in Paris, and who collaborated closely with the founder of the esoteric university in Nice. As researched by Wegener, Himmler purchased himself a manual for “pendulum practice and pendulum magic,” and in this way came also in touch with the theory of the gnostic “Od.” He believed in the “transmigration of souls,” attempted to obtain horoscopes from a Munich astrologer and his various occult advisors, and agreed with the hypotheses of Karl Heise (“Okkultes Logentum,” 1921) that occult powers were pulling the strings behind Communists, Jews, and Freemasons. On this background Wegener does not allow Himmler’s tendency about occult subjects pass as a mere private matter: “If Himmler’s image of the enemy with respect to Freemasonry and Jews was fed also by occult patterns, one can no longer speak of a ‘private matter,’ since the political and, by no means, private consequence of Himmler’s occult world view must be called mass murder."
