Rituale prägen unser persönliches Leben in sämtlichen familiären, kulturellen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Kontexten. Auch der evangelische Gottesdienst wird seit den 1970er-Jahren als "Ritual" bezeichnet. Doch was ist ein Ritual? Dieser Frage geht Richard Graupner in seinem Buch nach. In der evangelischen Liturgik wird der Begriff oft mit Worten wie Heimat, Sicherheit und Vertrautheit verbunden. Besonders innerhalb der sogenannten "Ritual Studies" hat sich ein Ritualbegriff etabliert, der das kritische Potenzial dieser Handlungen bewusstmacht und dabei auch die kognitiven Prozesse der Handelnden einbezieht. 'Sacramentality' can serve as a category that helps to understand the performative power of religious and legal rituals. Through the analysis of 'sacraments', we can observe how law uses sacramentality to change reality through performative action, and how religion uses law to organise religious rituals, including sacraments. The study of sacramental action thus shows how law and religion intertwine to produce legal, spiritual, and other social effects. [Easter Vigil as liturgical ritual: The heart of the church's year in the perspective of ritual theory] This dissertation gives a historical overview of the Easter Vigil service. It examines the form of this outstanding service by taking into account modern ritual studies. For decades, services held on the night before Easter have been well established in many congregations. By making this event comprehensible, believers celebrate the actual unavailable transition from the cross to the resurrection. To go deeper, this work considers seven aspects of the celebration: the anthropological, socio-cultural, ethically-dynamic, transcendent, performative, structural, and reflexive-critical dimension. Together they give a broad picture of this exceptional service. Additionally, empirical examinations and a presentation of the elements of the Easter Vigil round up the analyses.

The development of Early Christian rituals in connection with death and burial has so far not sufficiently been explored. Volp’s study focuses on the surviving literary sources—both pagan and Christian—, together with inscriptions and other archaeological remains while taking into account recent results from science and humanities. A summary of death and ritual in the ancient Mediterranean religions is followed by detailed analyses of the Christian sources from the 2nd to the 5th century. Thus, basic developments are being discovered which led to and accompanied the forming of Christian rituals, such as ritual purity or the social structure of family and society. Being the first such interdisciplinary approach, it also represents the first monographic work on the topic since 1941.
