Der Graf von Monte Cristo, Abenteuerroman des französischen Schriftstellers Alexandre Dumas (père) aus dem Jahr 1844, ist zusammen mit Die drei Musketiere eines der beliebtesten Werke dieses Autors. Die Geschichte spielt in Frankreich, Italien und auf den Mittelmeerinseln während der historischen Ereignisse von 1815 bis 1839: der Zeit der bourbonischen Restauration und der Herrschaft von Louis-Philippe von Frankreich. Sie beginnt an dem Tag, an dem Napoleon seine erste Verbannungsinsel Elba verlässt und die Hundert Tage beginnen, in denen Napoleon an die Macht zurückkehrt. Der historische Schauplatz ist ein wesentliches Element des Buches, einer Abenteuergeschichte, in deren Mittelpunkt die Themen Hoffnung, Gerechtigkeit, Rache, Barmherzigkeit und Vergebung stehen. Im Mittelpunkt steht ein Mann, der zu Unrecht inhaftiert ist, aus dem Gefängnis ausbricht, ein Vermögen erwirbt und sich daran macht, sich an denjenigen zu rächen, die für seine Inhaftierung verantwortlich sind. Bevor er seine Verlobte Mercédès heiraten kann, wird Edmond Dantès, ein neunzehnjähriger Franzose und Erster Offizier der Pharaon, fälschlicherweise des Verrats beschuldigt, verhaftet und ohne Gerichtsverfahren im Château d'If, einer düsteren Inselfestung vor Marseille, inhaftiert. Ein Mitgefangener, Abbé Faria, kommt zu dem Schluss, dass sein eifersüchtiger Rivale Fernand Mondego, sein neidischer Mannschaftskamerad Danglars und der doppelzüngige Magistrat De Villefort ihn verraten haben. Faria verhilft ihm zur Flucht und führt ihn zu einem wertvollen Schatz. Als mächtiger und geheimnisvoller Graf von Monte Cristo (Italien) kommt Dantès aus dem Orient in die mondäne Pariser Welt der 1830er Jahre, um sich an den Männern zu rächen, die sich gegen ihn verschworen haben. Marseille und Chateau d'If: Die Hauptfigur Edmond Dantès war vor seiner Inhaftierung ein Handelssegler. An dem Tag im Jahr 1815, als Napoleon von der Insel Elba flieht, legt Edmond Dantès mit seinem Schiff Pharaon in Marseille an. Sein Kapitän Leclère war während der Überfahrt gestorben; der Schiffseigner Morrel macht Dantès zum neuen Kapitän. Auf dem Sterbebett beauftragt Leclère Dantès, ein Paket an General Bertrand (der mit Napoleon im Exil lebt) und einen Brief von Elba an einen unbekannten Mann in Paris zu überbringen. Dantès' Kollege Danglars ist eifersüchtig auf Dantès' rasche Beförderung und fürchtet, da die beiden Männer zerstritten sind, um seinen eigenen Arbeitsplatz, sollte Dantès aufsteigen. Am Vorabend von Dantès' Hochzeit mit seiner katalanischen Verlobten Mercédès trifft sich Danglars in einem Kabarett mit Fernand Mondego, Mercédès' Cousin und Rivale um ihre Zuneigung, und die beiden schmieden ein Komplott, um Dantès anonym zu denunzieren und ihn fälschlicherweise zu beschuldigen, ein bonapartistischer Verräter zu sein. Danglars und Mondego stellen Dantès eine Falle. Bei dem Treffen ist Dantès' Nachbar Caderousse anwesend, der ebenfalls eifersüchtig auf Dantès ist, sich zwar gegen das Komplott wehrt, aber zu sehr vom Wein berauscht ist, um es zu verhindern. Am nächsten Tag wird Dantès beim Hochzeitsfrühstück verhaftet, und der feige Caderousse schweigt, weil er fürchtet, ebenfalls des Bonapartismus beschuldigt zu werden. Villefort, der stellvertretende Staatsanwalt in Marseille, vernichtet den Brief aus Elba, als er entdeckt, dass er an seinen eigenen Vater Noirtier, einen Bonapartisten, adressiert ist, da er weiß, dass dies seine eigene politische Karriere zerstören würde ...

Auf dem Sterbebett vertraute er Dantès ein Paket an und befahl ihm, es dem Großmarschall Henri-Gratien Bertrand auf der Insel Elba auszuhändigen, wohin Napoleon ins Exil verbannt wurde. Dantès erfüllt den letzten Wunsch des Kapitäns, erhält auf Elba wiederum einen Brief Napoleons und den Auftrag, diesen in Paris einem bestimmten Mann zu überbringen.... Alexandre Dumas der Ältere (1802-1870) war ein französischer Schriftsteller. Ein Markenzeichen von Dumas' Romanen sind fiktive oder pseudohistorische Protagonisten (zum Beispiel der Musketier d'Artagnan), deren Abenteuer in einen Kontext historischer Ereignisse und historischer Persönlichkeiten gestellt werden.
