Der Roman Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull von Thomas Mann endet mit der Zeit des Protagonisten alias Marquis de Venosta in Lissabon. Dieser Schluss wirkt für manchen Leser etwas abrupt. Der Autor dachte zwar daran, das Werk mit einem weiteren Band fortzusetzen, konnte diesen Plan jedoch nicht verwirklichen. Die Erzählung versucht als Verflechtung zwischen Historie und Fiktion, den Lebensweg eines Friedrich Kronberg als imaginäres Vorbild des Felix Krull nachzuzeichnen. Sie be- gleitet ihn auf den Stationen seiner Fluchten vor Polizei, Steuerfahndung und Nationalsozialismus. Seine persönlichen Aufzeichnungen und einige postume Interviews mit Zeit-zeugen lassen den Leser aber auch seine Wandlung vom Hochstapler, Glücksspieler, Unternehmer und Börsenspeku-lanten zum Naturfreund miterleben. Das Zeitgeschehen mit Weltkrieg, Weimarer Republik und Wirtschaftskrise bildet den Rahmen für das Lebensbild des Friedrich Kronberg. Seine Fluchten enden in Amerika, wo er als Emigrant ein Leben in Freiheit findet, nach dem er lange gesucht hat.

The German Pícaro and Modernity reads the re-emergence of the picaresque narrative in twentieth-century German-language writing as an expression of modernity and its social imaginaries. Malkmus argues that the picaresque, whose origins date back to the Spanish Renaissance and the Baroque Age, re-emerged as a reflection both of Germany's explosive modernizing processes between 1880 and 1930 and of the most barbarous implosion of modern civilization under National Socialism. Another reason for the fertility of this literary form at that particular cultural moment is rooted in the complexities of German-Jewish relations and the history of Jewish assimilation in central Europe. A considerable number of authors who used the picaresque form in the twentieth century are from a Jewish background, and Malkmus demonstrates how the picaresque narrative template also offers a medium for German-Jewish self-reflection. In highlighting these connections, he contributes not only to scholarship in European literature, but also but also to our understanding of major social, economic and political issues at stake in modernity

After over half a century of secrecy, a Swiss bank safe was opened, it contained the long-lost research notes of Josef Mengele, as well as those of his chief assistant in Auschwitz. Thus, a great investigation was launched to track him down and pin down his place in the medical system in Auschwitz and the horrendous medical experiments conducted there. However, after some time, doubts regarding the authenticity of the documents began to emerge. Thus, what promised to be a sensational historical breakthrough, soon turned into a criminal investigation into one of the greatest historical fraud attempts in recent decades. At the end of the second investigation, the person behind the forged documents was brought to trial and sentenced on 22 counts of fraud. This book thoroughly examines the way the fraud evolved over the span of three decades and how it succeeded in convincing so many people, while also comparing it to other historic hoaxes, particularly those concerning the Holocaust.
