Im Gegensatz zu anderen Tieren dient der Hund heute noch in Konflikten und Kriegen überall auf der Welt. Das Buch zeigt die Entwicklung von prähistorischer Zeit durch alle Epochen hinweg auf. Kamen in den frühen Tagen Hunde noch als aktive Kämpfer oder als Wächter zum Einsatz, so entstand in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts ein modernes Diensthundewesen. Im 1. Weltkrieg suchten Hunde nach Verletzten oder überbrachten Nachrichten durch die Kraterlandschaft der Westfront. Im 2. Weltkrieg begleiteten ausgebildete Hunde Patrouillen, spürten Feinde auf und sprangen erstmals an Fallschirmen ab. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg erlangten Diensthunde in den nunmehr vorherrschenden Konflikten auf tieferem Intensitätsniveau eine Nützlichkeit wie kaum zuvor. Auf dem Höhepunkt des Algerienkrieges beispielsweise standen fast 2'000 französische Diensthunde im Einsatz. Aber auch in Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, Nordirland, Irak, Afghanistan und vielen anderen Konflikten der jungen Vergangenheit nahmen Hunde viele Aufgaben war: Bewachung, Aufspüren von Sprengstoffen und Personen nebst vielen anderen. Die faszinierende Geschichte von Hunden im Krieg wird dargestellt vor dem Hintergrund der allgemeinen (Militär-) Geschichte.
