Albert Friedrich Benno Dulk (1819-1884) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Revolutionär, Religionskritiker, Sozialist, Freidenker, Naturwissenschaftler und Extremsportler. "Zügellos sein Wesen, Freiheit sein Sinn" (Arnholdine Dulk), eine treffsichere Kurzbeschreibung der unkonventionellen Lebensweise und Persönlichkeit des vielseitigen, rethorisch gewandten Querdenkers, der Obrigkeit und Kirche ablehnte, sich sozial und politisch in voller Hingabe für die Arbeiterklasse einsetzte und privat mit Ehefrau und zwei Lebenspartnerinnen in einem gemeinsamen Haushalt lebte. Neben Dramen, -bearbeitungen und Opernlibretti, verfaßte Dulk kirchenkritische Texte, insbesondere das hier vorliegende zweiteilige Werk, das sich im ersten Teil mit den historischen Wurzeln und die galiläische Blüte befaßt, im zweiten mit dem Messiasgang und die Erhebung ans Kreuz. Jesus Christus ist nach christlicher Lehre gemäß dem Neuen Testament der von Gott zur Erlösung aller Menschen gesandte Messias und Sohn Gottes. Mit seinem Namen drückten bereits die Urchristen ihren Glauben aus und bezogen die Heilsverheißungen des Alten Testaments auf die historische Person Jesus von Nazaret. Dulk vertritt die Auffassung, daß der Humanismus den Christianismus, als historische Form des Christusglaubens, ablöst. Sein Werk soll den Nachweis der "Grundlosigkeit" der idealen Verklärung des Christentums erbringen, "somit ist nicht nur das Leben Jesu, es ist zugleich die Religion selbst, sowohl ihr geschichtlicher Karakter, wie ihr (ethischer) sittlicher Bestand, Gegenstand dieser Schrift [.]." The Quest of the Historical Jesus is a review of all prior work on the question of the "historical Jesus" starting with the late 18th century. The author points out how Jesus' image has changed with the times and with the personal proclivities of the various authors. He concludes with his own synopsis and interpretation of what had been learned over the course of the previous century. The author takes the position that the life and thinking of Jesus must be interpreted in the light of Jesus' own convictions, which he characterizes as those of "late Jewish eschatology", and that Jesus defies any attempt at understanding him by making parallels to the ways of thinking or feeling of modern men.
