Deutsche Ordnungspolizisten wirkten am Judenmord in Polen in unvorstellbarem Maße mit. Neben SS und Hilfswilligen in den Vernichtungslagern stellte die deutsche Ordnungspolizei zwar nicht bei der Initiierung und Leitung, wohl aber bei der Durchführung des Judenmords das entscheidende Instrument dar. Etwa 30.000 Polizisten führten Erschießungen durch oder sicherten sie ab, trieben die Juden zu den Deportationszügen und bewachten sie auf dem Weg in die Vernichtungslager. In Chelmno beteiligten sich Polizeibeamte an der Ermordung von 152.000 Juden in Gaswagen. Polizisten riegelten die Ghettos hermetisch ab, so dass Juden durch Hunger, Kälte und Krankheiten ums Leben kamen. Polizisten sicherten ferner die Transporte aus einem Dutzend Ländern Europas in die Vernichtungslager in Polen, wo von diesen Deportierten etwa 630.000 sofort in den Gaskammern getötet wurden.

This is the first systematic pan-European study of the hundreds of thousands of non-Germans who fought — either voluntarily or under different kinds of pressures — for the Waffen-SS (or auxiliary police formations operating in the occupied East). Building on the findings of regional studies by other scholars — many of them included in this volume — The Waffen-SS aims to arrive at a fuller picture of those non-German citizens (from Eastern as well as Western Europe) who served under the SS flag. Where did the non-Germans in the SS come from (socially, geographically, and culturally)? What motivated them? What do we know about the practicalities of international collaboration in war and genocide, in terms of everyday life, language, and ideological training? Did a common transnational identity emerge as a result of shared ideological convictions or experiences of extreme violence? In order to address these questions (and others), The Waffen-SS adopts an approach that does justice to the complexity of the subject, adding a more nuanced, empirically sound understanding of collaboration in Europe during World War II, while also seeking to push the methodological boundaries of the historiographical genre of perpetrator studies by adopting a transnational approach.

After the German attack on Poland in 1939, vast swathes of Polish territory, including Warsaw and Krakow, were occupied by the Nazis in an administration which became known as the 'General Government'. The region was not directly incorporated into the Third Reich but was ruled by a German regime, headed by the brutal and corrupt Governor General Hans Frank. This was indeed the dark heart of Hitler's empire. As the first genuine Nazi colony, the General Government became the principal 'racial laboratory' of the Third Reich. As such, it was the site, and main source of victims, of Aktion Reinhard, the largest killing operation in human history in which at least 1.7 million Jews were murdered in just 18 months, and of a campaign of terror, exploitation and ultimately ethnic cleansing against the Polish population which was intended to serve as a template for the rest of eastern Europe. It was a place where 42,000 people could be shot in two days, where thousands of children could be abducted from their families, never to see their homeland again, and where guidebooks could invite German tourists to enjoy the culture and nightlife of cities that were 'now free of Jews'. This book provides a thorough history of the Nazi occupation regime and the experiences of the Poles, Jews and others who were trapped in its clutches. Employing sources ranging from diaries and testimony to previously underused material such as travel guides and poetry, Martin Winstone provides a unique insight into the occupation regime which dominated much of Poland during World War II with such disastrous consequences.
